FM Frequency of the Week - 96.5 MHz

What can you get on 96.5 FM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is semi-local WAKS/Akron, OH with Top-40 as 'Kiss FM' Their transmitter tower is located about halfway between Cleveland and Akron. During an E-skip last June, I heard a country station going in and out above WAKS but wasn't able to ID it.

In Bellevue, WA this frequency belongs to KJAQ (Jack FM).

Pacific Beach, WA is the same.

Portland, OR had a pirate here near Downtown, but I think I got KJAQ via Tr last time I was here (Labor Day Weekend 2012).

In Yakima, WA I get KWLZ Warm Springs, OR. I think KJAQ did make it over once however.

Baldwin County, Alabama (halfway between Pensacola, FL & Mobile, AL)

This is a good freq. for checking local conditions. I'm deep fringe of WZNS (Z Ninety Six) in Fort Walton Beach, a small town CHR owned by Cumulus. At 64 miles to my east, its 100 kW at 440 ft signal is not significant during dead conditions, but when tropo kicks up even a little, it can boom in.

During DX I've bagged WXHB, Richton, MS (Hattiesburg) and Magic 96 in Birmingham.

In Bellingham, WA, an unlistenable KJAQ (My oldest daughter occasionally uses 96.5 for her iPod xmitter)

Huntsville, AL: usually fringe coverage for AC WMJJ in Birmingham. Occasionally I've picked up WDOD from Chattanooga as well, but mountains between here and there hinder its reception greatly.

Northern VA, I get only IBOC from DC's WHUR 96.3. When ever there's tropo openings, I have gotten Richmond and Philly in the past.

From Gaffney, SC - usually static, but sometimes I can barely hear WOXL from Asheville, NC.
Sometimes the strong bleed from WHQC 96.1 makes it 2 adjacents to 96.5

I have gotten 96.5 WJCL "Kix 96" from Savannah GA during tropo a bunch of times....

I've also gotten e-skip from 96.5 KLTG in Corpus Christi Texas about 3 years ago...that was fun :)

Most of the time, it's adjacent channel interference from 96.3 WBBM-FM Chicago. If I'm in far southern Lake County, it's possible to pick up WAZY Lafayette Indiana. During tropo, I get either WAZY Lafayette IN or WKLH Milwaukee.

Do you ever get the Fredericksburg translator W243BS? (Rather ironic callsign for having been a simulcast of a news/talk station LOL). They just flipped formats to Fred FM with an eclectic format. I know WHUR I-BLOCK hash gets in the way more than anything there.

Under most conditions the IBLOCK on 96.5 is in the way and the W243BS just can't make it here in Manassas, VA. Had there be no IBLOCK I probably would. But I have sometimes get Richmond's WKLR 96.5 instead when I null out the IBOC when there's some tropo openings. And yes I have read that the Fredericksburg translator has became Fred FM. I may go to F'burg this weekend to get a listen to 96.5...it sounds like someone is bringing in local radio to the people down there...

Should be interesting reception as I remember getting WKLR in Fredericksburg somewhat scratchy during the day and stronger at night for some reason during trips there. I wonder why they didn't put the translator on something like 95.1 instead of on a Richmond channel.

From Coldwater, MI-

Tiny Class A WKZO-FM with News/Talk in Portage, MI. Slight enhancement brings in WQHH-Dewitt, MI with hip-hop (Power 96.5)

Others-
WAZY- Lafayette, IN- CHR- Z96.5
WAKS- Akron, OH- CHR- Kiss FM
W243AJ- Mishawaka, IN- Cont. Christian/WFRN
W243CL- Shelbyville, IN- CHR- Giant 96.5 (Actually got this one during intense Tr last fall, no joke)
WFTK- Cincinnati, OH- Rock
