FM Frequency of the Week: 97.1

Clifton, New Jersey

I get WQHT New York, NY. Currently, Hot 97 is on analog and HD1. Until recently, it aired an HD2 subchannel called Hot 97's Unsigned & On Their Grind, which aired music from independent Hip Hop artists.

Retro: Starting in 1986, WQHT was known as Hot 103 on 103.5, which aired a Dance-leaning Rhythmic CHR format. In 1988, it moved to 97.1 and became Hot 97. In 1993, it started to phase out Dance music and eventually became a full-fledged Hip Hop and R&B station.

In the Wilkes-Barre(Northeast PA) area, it's CHR "Hot 97.1" licensed in Mountain Top. Owned by Cumulus Media, it also simulcasts on WBHD 95.7, which serves the Scranton area.

The station signed on in the early 90's, first being a simulcaster for 590 WARM with the WYRM call letters. Later, it flipped to hot AC as "Y97" with the WYXY calls. Around '93, it switched to CHR as "Hot 97", and a few years later, added a simulcast, starting with 107.7 in Tunkhannock, then 94.3 in Carbondale, and then finally 95.7 in Olyphant. Around the same time, the station increased power and dropped the "Hot" name and started themselves "97 BHT"(possibly to avoid confusion with the "other" Hot 97 WQHT in NYC). Recently, the station started using the "Hot" name again, this time as "Hot 97-1", but without mentioning the 95.7 simulcast.

During the early years of "Hot 97", they used jingles from JAM Creative Production for a time. I remembered their cuts(Serving the Great Northeast..... and Today's Hits! HOT...HOT...HOT...........NINETY-SEVEN!!!!!)

Hartland, VT:

Nothing.

Meriden, CT:

WZBG Litchfield, adult contemporary. This station was established in the '80s by a group of wealthy Litchfield area residents, including Dick Ebersol and Susan St. James, but was recently sold to Full Power (aka Red Wolf) Broadcasting, a regional chain.
