FM Frequency of the Week - 97.5 MHz

In Lake County Indiana, this used to be an open frequency in the Chicago market, until a translator signed on in Chicago. Now, W248BB Hillside, IL dominates most of Chicagoland with a 250watt translator that has coverage similar to either a 3kw or 6kw Class A station, due to the antenna being on the Aon Building. It's still possible to get WZOK Rockford, IL, WYTZ Bridgman, MI, & WHMS Champaign, IL, though not as easily now. Those closest to Chicago will almost never get out of market stations anymore.

Springfield, IL: Mostly WHMS Champaign, IL, with WBBA Pittsfield, IL sprinkled in as well (particularly on the southwest side of the city). Also splatter from WLCE 97.7 Petersburg, IL/Springfield.

I always receive KNXR on my XDR-F1HD / APS9B combo, often very strongly, from 188 miles away, with its "beautiful music" format and oft-mentioned call letters. Often I hear it with a simple telescoping whip paired to the XDR-F1HD, although it's usually inaudible in the car as local KDNW Life 97.3 splatters onto 97.5.

Swinging west, I'll usually get something from KDKK from Park Rapids, MN, and swinging east I'll typically hear WHDG from Rhinelander, WI. However, those stations are typically much weaker than KNXR. I've also heard the 55-watt translator from Hinckley, MN, 60 miles away.

I've had a lot of luck in the past logging tropo on the frequency, as KNXR shuts down for the night; WTAQ came in from Glenmore, WI on July 19, 2011; KBVU came in from Alta, IA for the first time on August 26, 2011 and at least one time since; KEXL from Pierce, NE for the first time on July 31, 2011; KKCT from Bismarck, ND (a rare catch) on July 24, 2011; KJCK "Power 97.5" from Junction City / Manhattan, KS first on July 31, 2011 and about two or three times after during the Summer of 2011; and KMOD from Tulsa, OK, 755 miles, on August 26, 2011, one of my farthest tropo loggings, heard right after KBVU. An unknown Christian station was also present a night in 2011 when I had a tropo opening down to St. Louis.

E-skip loggings incude WABB from Mobile, AL in 2006; KFNC from Beaumont, TX in 2010; and KFTX from Kingsville, TX on a separate date in 2010.
