97.9 here is WCKL. Chicago. A station...or at least a dial position...with an interesting history. Notably involving ownership by the Chess Brothers as WSDM (Smack Dab in the "Middle). The Chess boys came up with a jazz format and an all-female staff. AS WCKL. it's K-Love Christian music.

I'm guessing you don't like Rock Music as the Loop

You hardcore skipped over the last 40 years :p

Hartland, VT:
Nothing.

Meriden, CT:
WUCS Windsor Locks, all-sports "ESPN 97-9" for now, but reports hidden behind a paywall hint at changes forthcoming. Could be a format flip (but to what?) or ditching ESPN for Fox Sports Radio, since this is an iHeart station and FSR is syndicated through iHeart-owned Premiere Networks. Strictly guesses on my part, will wait for whatever the news is to become public.

Oakland, CA...stuck in the middle between 97.7 KJLV and 98.1 KISQ.

I think Houston's the only place I've lived where there was something significant at 97.9...KFMK in those days...now something considerably different.

Wilmington Delaware

A weak signal from WIYY (98 Rock) in Baltimore. The signal is much stronger to my SW with good reception in Southern New Castle County and Kent County. WIYY is also the Flagship station for the Ravens and Orioles so it isn't Rock all the time.

Another frequent visitor is WBEY (Bay Country) in Crisfield MD. It puts in a stronger signal than WIYY many days and this morning I heard a Church service on 97.9 with the antenna pointed one direction then an ID of '98 Rock' with the antenna pointed the other way.

Tyler TX:

K250AJ Tyler, Oldies/Soft AC "QX-FM". Primary is KZQX 100.3 Tatum-Longview, owned by local broadcaster and ETX Broadcasting museum proprietor Chuck Conrad.

Often, KBFB DFW "97 9 The Beat" overtakes it during the morning hours, and since K250AJ picks up "QX" OTA, it will mistakenly pick up KRRV Alexandria, Louisiana and air country music.

Not at all. I listened to 97.9 regularly for quite a few years. The reason I skipped further detail is because it's already been discussed here as well on the Chicago board.

East Tennessee: Depending where you are, either pesky translator W250BR for WLIK-1270, Newport TN ( a widely heard DX catch) and WLHR (LP) in Maryville TN. Get away from them and it's often Nashville's powerhouse WSIX.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH area was usually some type of signal from the powerful WNCI, Columbus. Sometimes Anderson, IN's 's WGNR takes over (ex-WXXP and WLHN). I got WSIX there once.

WLHN had a good signal in Lafayette, IN. I don't ever remember hearing WLUP there.

In my reference to 97.9 in Houston, I totally forgot about the Loop in Chicago. Since EMF took it over, it just totally dropped from my radar.

South Mississippi:

WCPR D'Iberville, MS - 97.9 CPR Rocks always has a good signal. One time, strong tropo brought in
KBXX Houston - 97.9 The Box (rhythmic contemporary)

One of my closest locals, WPXY-FM here in Rochester... which was also the top 40 station of my childhood.

Blowtorch local WPXY less than a mile away.

I don't think it's been off the air since the 2003 blackout.
