FM Frequency of the week - 98.5 MHz

I didn't see a thread about this...

What do you get on FM 98.5

I get from Vallejo, CA

KRXQ Sacramento, CA in Glen Gove & sometimes KUFX San Jose, CA weak

In Rochester NY, it's a mix of WKSE Niagara Falls (65 miles west) and WNYR Waterloo NY (40 miles southeast), once one gets out from under the RF haze of locals WPXY 97.9/WBZA 98.9.

In northern VA,

I get only IBOC hiss from DC's WMZQ 98.5. When I zero in the null on the IBOC with the antenna, I usually get WYCR 98.5 from Hanover, PA about 75 miles north. WYCR is a classic hits station also known as "The Peak."

In Durham, North Carolina, 98.5 MHZ is usually Rocky Mount's WDWG "Big Dawg Country" or Creedmoor translator W253AZ, which rebroadcast Liberty University's Vistory FM (though I'm not sure if the main WRVL signal or one of their full-power NC FMs).

DX I've received on 98.5 here includes...

WDAI, Pawley's Island, SC
KSAJ, Abilene, KS
WBZF, Hartsville, SC
KTIS, Minneapolis, MN
KGBT, McAllen, TX
KQKQ, Council Bluffs, IA

*An interesting aside is that WDWG can also be heard around these parts quite frequently on 105.5 FM, as Liberty's Durham translator W288BU is fed by Creedmoor translator W253AZ, which is often overpowered by WDWG.

Vermilion, OH:

98.5 is local WNCX/Cleveland (Classic Rock). One time when they were off the air, during the 2003 blackout, I was faintly picking up WUPS from Harrison, MI on my car radio in Vermilion.

CIOC Victoria, BC here. 98.5 The Ocean, AC format.

-crainbebo

From Coldwater, MI-

Very, very local WNWN. Their 50kw signal originates from a tower just 7 miles away from my house. When they are off the air (maybe 4-5 times a year), I can hear

WUPS / Harrison, MI
WNCX / Cleveland, OH
WARU / Peru, IN
WINH / Paris, IL
WRRM / Cincinnati, OH
WQBH / Green Bay, WI

We had a freak storm last June which left WNWN off the air for 5 days! During this extended down time, I was able to ID.
WXXQ / Freeport, IL
WKSE / Niagara Falls, NY
WDWG / Rocky Mount, NC- (my first, and probably only, Es catch on 98.5!)

The most common I pick up in Fresno/Clovis is KDFO "The Fox" Classic Rock in Bakersfield 110 miles away.
I have heard KXRQ " Active Rock" Sacramento and KUFX "The Fox" in San Jose.

In Houston, 98.5 is a rimshot regional Mexican KTJM "La Raza" from Port Arthur. I have logged KBBT-Schertz "98.5 The Beat" during tropo.

Greenville, PA, usually Froggy 98.5 from Oil City, but sometimes it gets beat out by WNCX 98.5 Cleveland.

Here in Poughkeepsie, NY, 98.5 is dominated by WCTW Catskill, NY "The Cat", 30 miles to the North.

DX on 98.5 since 2003:

WKTK Crystal River, FL "98.5 KTK"
WSB Atlanta, GA "B-98.5"
KQKQ Council Bluffs, IA
WBMX Boston, MA "Mix 98.5" (since changed to WBZ-FM "The Sports Hub")
KTIS Minneapolis, MN
WKMK/WBBO Ocean Acres, NJ
WCKM Lake George, NY
WBON Westhampton, NY "The Bone" (since changed to Spanish format)
KVOO Tulsa, OK -- most distant on 98.5 at 1250 miles.
WKRZ Wilkes-Barre, PA "K-R-Z" -- very common in summer.
WYCR York, PA "York's Classic Hits"

CIOC out of Victoria, BC (CIOC has a surprisingly powerful signal, can be heard as far away as downtown Seattle easily.)

98.5 is interesting here. No station dominates, and the closest station is Pawleys Island about 80 miles away. It comes in frequently, more often than any other during the summer. During the winter, it is often vacant. Columbia is often in mixing with Pawleys, and during the summer, I've gotten the 6kw oldies station out of Melbourne several times.

I've also heard WSB-FM on the frequency, and WKTK a few times.

from Nashville - WGIC (Magic 98.5) Cookeville, TN...not so much west of I-65, tho
