FM Frequency of the Week: 98.5

Carmichael, CA

KRXQ Sacramento

Vallejo, CA

KRXQ Sacramento with Weak Signal

Once in a while I get a Weak Signal of KUFX San Jose

Wilmington Delaware

W253CQ a LPFM with Delaware Department of Transportation Information for travelers. The XMTR is 10 miles to my S but still puts a strong signal here. It came on the air a few years ago relaying WTMC 1380 am. 98.5 was an empty frequency most of the time but the LPFM prevents me from hearing WUSX in Seaford DE when conditions exist for it to propagate this far N. I still can catch it sometimes on warm humid evenings if I swing the antenna around. WUSX carries the same conservative talk as WGMD 92.7 in Rehoboth Beach DE which I can hear much easier. WUSX used to be WGBG a Classic Rock station but it moved to 107.7 a few years ago with more power but it is also blocked by a LPFM just S of me relaying WRTI in Philadelphia. LPFM's are an enemy of DX'ers!

Denver, CO -
Bonneville's KYGO, country. KYGO-HD2 is "Legendary Country", country classics.

Hartland, VT:

Nothing. In fact, no 98.5s are licensed in Vermont or New Hampshire.

Meriden, CT:

W253BQ Meriden, translator carrying the "tropical" (as Nielsen and Radio-Locator classify it) format of Red Wolf/Full Power Radio's "Bomba" chain of AMs and/or translators.

Nutley, NJ: Quiet mostly. Usually a faint pirate or WBBO/WBON mixing in with airplanes going by
Tropo: WBBO Ocean Acres, NJ or WBON from Westhampton Beach, NY. Rare tropo events: WKRZ Freeland, PA and WUSX Seaford, DE

North Iowa:
Weak signal from KKHQ/Cedar Falls, though KTIS-FM/Minneapolis has come in from time to time.

Central Kansas:
Formerly a strong signal from KSAJ-FM/Abilene, the frequency occupied by the now Burlingame-licensed station is empty locally.

Rochester NY: I moved WEPL-LP from 97.1 to 98.5 a few weeks ago in order to move translator W298CH from 107.5 to a much stronger signal on 97.1, rebroadcasting WEPL-LP. Without the 98.5 LPFM on the air (it had earlier been a different, now-defunct LPFM, WARI-LP), it's deep fringe from WKSE Niagara Falls to the west and WNYR Waterloo to the east.

Clifton, New Jersey

No nearby licensed stations, but sometimes I get a pirate station station under normal conditions. This is a great frequency for me to DX because 98.7 WEPN does not broadcast in HD.

Stations received during tropo include:
WBBO "B98.5" Ocean Acres, NJ
WBON "La Fiesta 98.5" Westhampton, NY
WBZ-FM "98.5 The Sports Hub" Boston, MA
WUSX "92.7 & 98.5 WGMD" Seaford, DE
WKRZ "98.5 KRZ" Freeland, PA
WCTW "98.5 The Cat" Catskill, NY

Stations received during e-skip include:
WFSY "Sunny 98.5" Panama City, FL
WKTK "98.5 KTK" Crystal River, FL
WYLD-FM "98.5 WYLD" New Orleans, LA
WSB-FM "B98.5" Atlanta, GA

Central Kentucky:
W253BK, translator for WBUL HD 2 "98.1 The Bull Icons".
Classic Country on WBULs HD 2 channel. A decent signal that I listen to occasionally, being 26 miles out.
Used to hear WRRM Cincinnati before this translator signed on.

I forgot to add one to my e-skip list from Clifton, NJ. In 2021, I received KSAJ-FM "98.5 Jack-FM" Burlingame, KS. The transmitter is about 1,148 miles (1,849 km) from me.

In the Wilkes-Barre, PA(Northeast PA) area, it's legendary CHR 98.5 KRZ! Home to longtime personality Jumpin' Jeff Walker who is STILL a popular radio personality in the area since the station signed on back in 1980(can't believe he is still hangin' on despite all the talent layoffs within the radio industry!)

Fun fact: Long time ago, in addition to playing top 40 music, they used to have a retro show called "Saturday Night Live At The Oldies" that played disco, classic dance, and rock from the 70's and 80's than ran from 7-midnight. When the station celebrated its 25th anniversary back in 2005, during the second hour they played old airchecks of the station, mostly from the 80's, complete with former personalities as well as classic JAM jingles.

KRZ has a simulcast on 107.9 serving the Poconos. I don't know why they don't mention 107.9 in the branding, except for station IDs.
