FM Frequency of the Week - 98.7 MHz

What can you get on 98.7 FM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is mostly IBOC from WNCX 98.5 from Cleveland. WDZH/Detroit sometimes breaks thru the hash with a varying signal. Tropo-enhancement from the south will bring in WYKL/Crestline, OH (near Mansfield)

Despite living practically under the tower for 50kw 98.5 WNWN, I can manage in the car, albeit under some splatter.

WDZH- Detroit, MI (CHR- Amp Radio)
WFMT- Chicago, IL (Classical)

On the home stereo set-up, I can also get
WFGR- Grand Rapids, MI (Classic Hits)
WQME- Anderson, IN (Cont. Christian)

Very rarely..
WASK- Battle Ground, IN (Classic Hits)
WYKL- Crestline, OH (Cont. Christian/ K-Love)
CBCB- Owen Sound, ON (Public Radio/ CBC)
WLFQ-LP- Elkhart, IN (Christian hip-hop.. Probably one of the few, if not the only, stations like this in the entire country)

In Monroe, WA - all I get is IBOC from 98.9 KLCK.
I did pick up KPKX Phoenix, AZ on 7/24/12, during an E-skip opening to AZ.

In Yakima I get a local, KMNA Mabton (Regional Mexican).

In Portland I get KUPL, which just switched to "98.7 The Bull" from "98.7 KUPL". The format is still country however.

On the Washington Coast I usually have KUPL or static.

From central Baldwin Co., Al., it's local "Cat Country 98.7" WYCT, licensed to Pensacola. The only 100 kW commercial station in the Mobile or Pensacola markets that's not on one of the three big tall towers in the middle of Baldwin County. They're northeast of the towers and because of that have a more marginal signal in Mobile. They're tightly spaced between New Orleans and Panama City there's no moving anywhere else for them! They're also Pensacola's last locally owned commercial FM, if I'm not mistaken.

Just KUPL, which underwent a name-change recently. There's actually a rumour going about that this is "stunting" in anticipation of a format flip to smooth jazz.

Northern VA,

Just WMZQ in DC with a country format, with an HD-2 channel playing classic country.

Regarding WFMT...That's one of the very few remaining classical stations above the 88-92 section of the dial.

Houston gets a mix of KLUV, Dallas, and KTXN, Victoria - depending on where you are in town and the skip conditions.

From Gaffney, SC - Strong IBOC from WSPA, Magic 98.9.
If tropo is strong enough I can sometimes hear WSMW 98.7 Simon from Greensboro NC,
or very rarely I can hear 98.7 from Savannah GA during very strong tropo.

In both cases I still get splatter interference from 98.9 WSPA HD (Class C) about 30 miles away.

Here between St Augustine and Jacksonville, Savannah's 98.7 the river is a regular visitor. 98.7 The Gater will come in on occasion. This is a fun frequency to monitor while commuting to work at 6-6:30 am.

In St. Petersburg, it's CBS owned WHFS 98.7, the FAN, licensed to Holmes Beach (Manatee County) with almost 500 foot tower (short stick) and 50,000 watts; tower is located in Seminole (Pinellas county). It is one of the strongest FM signals where I am, so even in tropo, I don't get anything else.

However it just barely covers the Tampa/St. Pete metro and doesn't cover eastern Hillsborough county or n.e. Pasco county very well.

drt,
st. petersburg,fl

Which WHFS is an ex-Smooth Jazz station, WSJT.

Exactly! Now the smooth jazz is relagated to their HD2 channel. Actual jazz is available on WUSF 89.7 overnights from 9PM - 5 AM,(NPR talk during the day).

The Orlando market did the same thing about a year ago, the smooth jazz in Orlando is also now religated to an HD2 channel; that seems to be the trend, nationwide.

Can you receive any Charleston FM's daily?

Warminster PA(Philadelphia area):

Usually splatter from 98.9 WUSL("Power 99") from Philly. Most of the time, it would be WEPN(ESPN) from NYC.
Have also heard WMZQ from DC and WNOR from Norfolk VA in tropo situations.
