FM Frequency of the Week for 12/10/21: 99.1

Hey everyone, we are now on a commercial week as Christmas edges closer.

I've got 99.1 KUAD Windsor, about 50 miles away, and it generally comes in with HD. I am suprised they don't have any other subchannels. This frequency has been stubborn for E-skip, but luckily 98.9 and 99.3 remains Dxable for me here in Cheyenne.

Surely the rest of you have better luck! :) Also, I will let you all know my holiday schedule for FM-FOTW. Happy Friday!

From SE Michigan near Detroit:

25 years ago WFMK in East Lansing was all alone in the clear with a decent signal that easily reached Detroit's western suburbs.

Nowadays 99.1 in SE Michigan is a bit more crowded. CJAM-FM from Windsor, ON moved to the frequency about 12 years ago, along with several translators. Several months ago yet another translator signed on with a sports-talk format, transmitting from somewhere downriver (Southern part of the Detroit metro area).

Other stations that occasionally make an appearance:

WHKO Dayton Ohio. Common here when tropo permits. ~200 miles.

WFRO-FM Fremont Ohio. Prior to translators hijacking the frequency I could receive pretty much at will if I aimed my yagi at it. ~110 miles, across lake Erie.

East Tennessee: All WNML-FM, all the time but especially in Sevier County or brief times they are off the air, something else can make it in, and I believe it to be WJNV, Jonesville VA. WNML is a rimshot to the Knoxville market, so much so WRJZ parked a translator on 99.1 in Sevier County. After complaints, that was short-lived and moved to 99.5

Retro/other: In Dayton, Ohio powerhouse WHKO is local and never off the air. I've heard WHKO as far away as Northwest Indiana.
Gerard Westerling formerly had an FM DX site in Lexington, KY where he streamed 99.1 continuously. In one sitting, I had WHKO, WSLQ Roanoke, WIAI Danville IL, KFUO in St. Louis at minimum. This lasted until a local fired up in Lexington

Kenosha, WI- WMYX Milwaukee. Tower is located in Hales Corners (SW Milwaukee County) and, with 50KW is the only Milwaukee FM to have a city-grade signal all the way to the WI-IL state line. Their signal holds up well into the north Chicago suburbs.

Originally WEMP-FM, they started airing the Hit Parade canned format in the late 60s. Changed call letters to WNUW and was a really good AC station. WMYX calls came in the early 80s. They are commonly credited as being the first station in the country to use the "Mix" branding.

Many moons ago I received WFMK on a rare WMYX off-the-air period.

WMYX often makes it to my location in the near north Chicago suburbs. I started listening during their "Hit Parade" format in the late 60s. The signal is not as reliable now as it used to be.

South Mississippi:
WKNN Pascagoula, MS "K99 Country" usually is clear, tropo brings in KXKC New Iberia, LA, also a country station. Also on 99.1 is WXDR-LP New Orleans, LA "Dolphin Radio" the Delgado Community College station. I enjoy hearing their nice variety of music when in the area.

KUAD was obviously strong for me in Laramie but not strong enough to kill eskip on 99.1 and here's the audio proof:

KUJ Burbank WA (Top 40) is the usual station on 99.1 here in Ellensburg.

Also heard by Eskip
KTMG Prescott Valley AZ (Adult Contemporary)
KUAD Windsor CO (Country)
KJIL Copeland KS (CCM)
KTLI El Dorado KS (K-LOVE)
KMA-FM Shenandoah IA (News/Talk)

99.1 here in Chicago's far northwest suburbs is WMYX from Milwaukee. It's the best Milwaukee FM signal here, even though, as radioman has observed, it's not quite as it used to be for some reason. But I can give you the reason for WMYX still being the best Milwaukee signal here. It's a very simple explanation. Most of the Milwaukee FMs are on the TV towers a few miles north of downtown. Meanwhile, WMYX's stick is in the southwest suburbs....about fifteen miles closer to my location than the other guys.

Not much around Columbus, Ohio anymore, thanks to the digital signal of local talker WTOH on 98.9. But if you're far enough from their 2,600-watt signal, WHKO can sneak through. It was not uncommon in the pre-digital era to hear WHKO within 15 miles of downtown Columbus, in parts of western and southwestern Franklin County.
I've heard it a few times in the digital era as well even with the hash sidebands.
In my experience, WHKO and WHIO probably are tied for the best FM signals out of the Dayton market.
