FM Frequency of the Week, Week 2: 98.1

Last week we did 93.5. Now it's 98.1's turn.

Here at home, the car radio usually picks up WWJO St. Cloud, MN. Being 105 miles away, the signal is variable: during the summer it's often very strong, at other times of the year it can barely be heard.

Because of WWJO's domination DX-wise, I've only logged two other stations: WISM Altoona, WI (143 miles) and WNUE Titusville, FL (1382 miles), which happens to be my longest E-Skip catch to date.

Plano, TX outside of Dallas
IBOC sidebands from local 97.9 make the frequency almost useless. Before IBOC, KVET Austin was an easy DX.

98.1 is splatter here, but I've heard KHAK Cedar Rapids and 2 98.1's in Washinton state plus a slough of others on Skip I've completely forgotten the names of.

Not a bad frequency here in the Dayton/Springfield OH area, once you're out of range of the University of Dayton's WGXM. Usually it's either "The Bull", the 100kW Country giant (formerly "Double Q" WKQQ) from Lexington, KY or WDFM (Mix 98.1) from Defiance OH. I've also heard WIBN in Earl park, IN several times.

From Coldwater, MI:

98.1 is the home of a semi-local 50kw station (WDFM) which has a fair signal on most days. No contest for tropo events though. WKCQ comes in from Saginaw at least once every week or so. During stronger tropo events, WIBN from Earl Park, IN, WMGN from Madison and WKDD from Canton, OH come in.

There's a new translator on 98.1 about 50 miles away from here in Goshen, IN. I want to try to get them during a strong short-haul tropo opening this year.

98.1 is dominated here near Poughkeepsie, NY by semi-local WKZE, Sharon, CT, whose tower is actually here in Dutchess County, NY 19 miles away. WOGL-Philly heard during many tropo events, and once in a while tropo brings in WHWK Binghamton, NY or WCTK New Bedford, Mass. WJJR-Vt has been heard with WKZE off the air. Only 7 total loggings on 98.1... most distant is WTXT Fayette, Alabama at 957 miles during a July 2003 E-Skip opening. Other logging is my only South Carolina, WYBB Folly Beach (714 miles), heard during that same E-SKip 7 minutes earlier.

WCTK "Cat Country" New Bedford, MA is weak but steady here around Boston. I've only heard WKZE when I've been out that way. I heard WOGL make it up here on troppo one night.

Due to a powerful local on 97.9 this isn't nearly as productive as 93.5. Still, I've got a fair bit of DX. 16 stations total. Most common is WRAY Princeton, Ind. and WYKL near Memphis. (I think there's been a call change out there, WXMX?) Probably my best catch is KUDL Kansas City via tropo. (I've heard further stations via Es but 480-mile tropo is IMHO better DX...)

Unfortunately the powerful local has activated IBOC. I'm sure I'll still hear Es on 98.1 but I think the days of long-haul tropo on the channel may be over.

I have never logged any E-Skip on 98.1, only tropo, at my location in Beecher, IL (35 miles south of Chicago). Here is my tropo log...

Code:
KHAK 98.1 FM Cedar Rapids IA USA Country
KYKY 98.1 FM St. Louis MO USA Y-98 Light Rock
WIBN 98.1 FM Earl Park IN USA 98 Gold Oldies
WMGN 98.1 FM Madison WI USA Magic 98 Light Rock, Oldies
WZOE 98.1 FM Princeton IL USA Z-98 Light Rock
