FM Gospel in Dallas?

Last month Radio One took over a Bonnerville FM signal in DC and flipped it to Gospel. They also just flipped a signal in Houston and they are putting Yolanda Adams morning show on those markets as well as Atlanta. So it looks as if they are starting to push the FM Gospel formats in markets they have a third signal (subsequent to urban and urban ac). So is there a possibility of then attempting the same in Dallas...........About two years ago they ran gospel everynight after 7:00 pm on 94.5 but eventually removed it I believe due to ratings .......... Are they are willing to buy another signal especially one that would reach the target?........If one was interested in doing so who may be willing to sell a signal that reaches the southern parts of the market?..........And the big question, would Dallas support the format?

It was tried several years ago on 104.9. But it was quickly given up on because of signal problems. When Radio One came in to the market they should have bought KHVN, made and AM-FM combo of 97.9 and 970. They could have both been gospel formats, but 970 playing the traditional gospel(Rev. James Cleveland, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Etc.) and 97.9 playing mostly the upbeat gospel(Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Etc.) I think it would have been a power house combo......

The Beat has been a very strong performer for Radio One. Gospel on the other hand generally has the worst power ratio of any format. Even if Gospel could pull a 2.5-3.0 (12+) it would still be a really rough road to becoming a big money maker.

While KHVN would be a good addition to their cluster, I think Radio One made the right programming decision when they first entered the market.

Radio One's KROI "Praise 92.1" has been a pleasant success in Houston since the flip nine months ago. Highest numbers ever on that frequency. RO also reengineered the signal, which didn't hurt, either.

If Houston continues to do well, you gotta think they're seriously considering the format for DFW.

Not to mention, WPZE-FM Praise 97.5 in Atlanta. It's not a great signal, and they are pulling good shares. They are trending downward slightly, but they have been going strong for about three or four years now. The problem with the DFW Market and Gospel is the lack of success with your Urban AC stations. Granted KRNB & KSOC are on weak signals, but given their low ratings with Urban AC, I don't see Gospel doing much better. Even when KRBV V100 was on the air there, on a good signal, the numbers were not outstanding. I could be wrong, but I think I'd go with Smooth Jazz again, before I went with Gospel. I haven't listened to KHVN in a number of years, but they used to sound great for an AM station. Does KLTY have any Gospel programming or is it all Contemporary Christian?

KLTY typically plays the Contemporary Christian (Rock), from time to time they play Contemporary Gospel crossover hits but that's it......You would think that with all the mega black Churches in Dallas, they would support it. But the main problem would be finding a good stick to put it on and I don't think that they would being willing to pay that type of money for a Gospel station. But it RO doesn't want to do it I'm sure someone would ;)

Why would the mega churches support KLTY when KLTY does not care about that demo. Trust me, having worked for Salem part time for the past 6 years, they have no interest in Black Gospel music. I have never seen any of the Salem stations in Oak Cliff. NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!! If they were in the Cliffs they were in Kessler Park.

I was speaking of mega black Churches supporting the mythical FM gospel station, not KLTY.

Im sure they would support it.

I still believe that KHVN should be Heaven 97.9... but that's thinking outside the box...

Radio One bought then-KLUV 1190 from Infinity in 2000, who had to divest of a radio station. They changed the calls to KJOI and announced a black gospel format would be coming...but it never changed from the 50s-60s oldies format.

Instead, in early 2001, Radio One ended up buying KDGE 94.5 from Sunburst. They bought the KTXQ calls and rhythmic oldies format from Clear Channel to move from 102.1; CC bought the KDGE intellectual property to move to 102.1.

My guess is at the time, Radio One (were they public yet?) didn't have the cash to purchase both 94.5 and 1190. The 1190 facility was immediately spun to CC once Radio One closed on it from Infinity; CC changed it to Fox sports.

Naw, Radio One owned 1190 outright before CC got it....Lowry Mays (pushed by Randy Michaels) wanted an AM to play A&M football in Dallas....and of course spent 18+ million getting 1190 from Radio One....I was suprised Radio One never ran their Gospel format on 1190....everytime I saw the Scott system running oldies, I just shook my head (though it was nice to hear MUSIC on an AM........on the PRE console in stereo, it was nice...but then monoed and ran to the xmtr, it just didnt sound right...

The stunting of 1190 when CC flipped it to FOX sports....oh the pain, the pain....("TIME..........TIME!!".............after hearing that twice, it was ENOUGH!)
