FM GROUNDWAVE

KPQ 102.1 Wenatchee, WA, some 85 miles. Rarely I can get KXLE 95.3 Ellensburg, WA at 101 miles.

So, is there actually such a thing as FM "groundwave" or FM "skywave"?

Sure. There is FM "skywave." By definition, skywave is refraction from the ionosphere (without regard to layer). In the Summer, of course, we get sporadic-E, commonly called "E-skip." That is skywave.

DE

It is the same signal, bounced off the atmosphere. The telling thing is that there's never any groundwave/skywave cancellation on FM because its all the same signal.

Technically, you are correct. If there is not groundwave, there cannot be any groundwave/skywave cancellation.

However
, we get the same practical consequences when multi-path signals cause the same symptoms. And when distant refracted or tunneled signals come from a distance, they often show up with these symptoms.

IME experience of 30 year's biz travel, KRTH is a pretty impressive example. 100kw (or whatever) parked on top of Mt. Wilson. Reliable in downtown San Diego on a good car radio. 103.3 out of Santa Barbara is even more impressive.

I'm in total agreement on KRTH - it has a spectacular signal. It is almost local in parts of SD county and it's one of the clearest LA signals up towards Santa Barbara as well.

KRTH also has an excellent signal east in the Coachella Valley especially as you go passed the mountains east of Palm Springs.
