FM in Spanish in Charlotte?

:eek:I heard yesterday that there might be a deal being work out to bring to Charlotte the first FM in Spanish? Has anyone heard anything about it?

OK Tropicanna Media - You apparently know the same info I do about Hitz94. It's going to happen isn't it?

[/qI guess for it to become a truly Charlotte station, the CP will have to go through. If it was to remain at the present location, the coverage won’t be the best for Charlotte, plus it will encounter the competition of La Preciosa. If I was investing the amount of money that I heard is going for, I would have some kind of ace in my sleeve, won’t you? :Duote]

Yeah, Tropicana - But, if it remains where it is, it might be possible to sell both in Charlotte AND the Triad. There is room for two Hispanic stations in the Triad, and Hitz94 does have a city-grade signal in Charlotte, right now.

La Preciosa was down almost a full share 12+ (all I've seen) in the latest trend. What makes you think the Triad would support 2 Spanish?

TSL for La Preciosa increased in all the dayparts. As for 2 stations in the triad will be difficult. The other two am's are struggleing, the ROI will be very low. So my opinion is that the Triad is note ready for two FM's (for what is worth).

Why is everyone so anxious to see an FM Spanish station in Charlotte? Miami went for years before the first Spanish FM appeared and they had a lot more Spanish speaking population to support it.

None of the AM stations broadcast at night, do they?

To answer why, Spanish is one of the hottest growing formats nationwide. Many heritage stations with longtime formats have gone Spanish over the last couple years (KSJO San Jose, WHFS Washington, KLOL Houston, etc.) I'm surprised it hasn't happened in Charlotte already (unless you count the rimshot from 102.3). I can't say I get into the Regional Mexican sound with all the Mariachi, etc., but a Tropical Spanish AC/Top-40 would be pretty nice.

WGSP 1310 does, probably not much power but I can sure hear them where I live.

Charlotte is being served by two am's with a regional mexican format. I am sure that if there was an FM station it wouldn't matter what kind of format (Spanish) besides RM, would do excellent. Maybe something like VIVA in Atlanta would be appealing to almost everyone in the area. Another option would be Spanish Urban, but the Spanish population of Charlotte is a little more mature that let's say the Triad or the Triangle. 8)

I've done a little bit of investigating...and...I've found a whole heap of news for you listeners out there in radioland!

A new Hispanic FM station is coming to the region. A little bird has confided in me with the information that HITZ 94, Lexington is being sold to Norberto Sanchez, a native of Peru. Mr. Sanchez apparently owns around 8 radio stations and a string of 22 restaurants in the Atlanta area. The purchase price for 94.1 is $20 million, which will be split four ways among the owner's family. The original deal was dropped so the owner and buyer would not have to pay the broker! But then the "sale" was agreed on later. Apparently, Mr. Sanchez will take over the station with a L-M-A in the beginning, which will apparently cost him approximated $33,000 monthly.

My source says there are plans in the works to move the antenna to a new or existing tower closer to Charlotte so the station will be focused on that market--leaving the Triad behind! Hell, I can't speak Spanish anyway!

As for Gig's AM station in Lexington, he will apparently retain ownership to give him "something to do" other than playing golf!

I have not been able to nail down when the "flip of the switch" will occur! But apparently, it will be SOON!

Guess we will all see what the hell happens over the next few days!

Just remember, if I'm right--you heard it here first! If I am wrong, hell--that's one of the reasons I'm getting out of this damn business!!!

Dr. News. You sound like an intelligent man. No insults here, but I think your information has been planted. My source says they are deliberately planting this information to throw everyone off. They are going OLDIES. Check back on the GSO board for a thread that was written a while back about Hitz94 being sold. It has pretty much that same information in it. I heard the deal fell through and I think they're resurrecting it for the purpose of throwing us off. Manwhore on the GSO board is Bob of their morning show. Notice how hard he is trying to lead us in the Hispanic direction. I think "Smurfette" is probably Leslie who works with Bob. They're going Oldies and that's that! Will probably happen very soon, like maybe next week. I think they will probably stunt with Hispanic, then switch to Oldies.

MaskMan--you "may" be right and this whole Hispanic thing is a "plant." But I believe that my information is correct! The info is NOT a plant from someone posting on this site! It came from the son of the man, who was the broker for the deal between Gig and Sanchez. The whole thing may have fallen through. But with everything my credible source told me--I have to believe him. Guess we'll just have to wait and see about this one. Hell, we may ALL be wrong! It could be all polka music--all the time!

Not Polka. Oldies. Here on Wednesday. Will they actually do it right? Will they market it? All remains to be seen. They let their Midday Personality, Carmen go today. She was good. Lots of potential, but not for Oldies. I think others will lose their jobs before it's all over. :-\

That's always regretable. They should at least give the jocks a chance to do the format, if they want to. This really messes up people's lives. But nobody ever seems to care about that. I hope they gave her more than the 2 week kiss off, but I doubt it.
