FM News 101.9 messes up again!

nd2023

Banned
I was listening to the all news stations on my HD radio while walking up Broadway after the Giants parade. I noticed that FM News 101.9's HD was messed up. It sounded like an Internet stream buffering even while I was standing in the same place, and the HD audio was at least 20 seconds behind the analog audio. I also noticed its HD signal was weaker and/or more susceptible to multipath, since it was going in and out of HD a lot. 92.3-HD3, 101.1-HD3, and 102.7-HD3 were solid, albeit with very few dead zones.

So there, FM News 101.9 manages to alienate the 10 people with HD radios. That is a significant part of its low cume.

A well known morning radio personality mentioned 101.9 this morning (although not by name, so I won't mention his name) and brought up an interesting point. He said he listened for about 20 minutes and during that time the "news" was almost entirely a listing of poll results ... one right after the other! So I guess their news judgement is flawed even beyond the predominance of Snooki news and fashion tips.

Well, there was a rather important election on Tuesday

Well ... more important than the quality of WEMP's HD signal ;) but in the big picture of today's news, not so much.

Merlin and Cumulus will have to get their act together in the All News division if they want to beat flagship CBS O&O's like WBBM AM/FM, KCBS 740/106.9 and WCBS 880 / WINS 1010.

On one hand in SFO we have 3 sports stations Cumulus KNBR 680/1050 and 95.7 FM The Game Entercom owned. Look in SFO Cumulus handles KNBR 680/1050 well the same way CBS handles WCBS 880 and WINS 1010 well. 95.7 FM in San Francisco is the Merlin wannabe of sports. While KGO the Cumulus flagship O&O in SFO is the Merlin Wannabe news station in the Bay Area. We have to wait if Cumulus plans to do Merlin Tactics in other markets like LA to compete with the Flagship CBS O&O like KNX to find out.

No question that reporting poll results as news does not meet traditional standards of journalism. However, WEMP is hardly the only offender. WCBS and WINS often solicit opinions on the sidewalks of New York, providing even less meaningful information.

If 101.9 was reading election results, that would be more valuable... it was just a primary... Snow/school closings in April are more valuable...

@Recto: Do "Merlin tactics" include operating a vehicle under the influence? (allegedly) ::)

It's a primary from 3 states not in 101.9's coverage area. Only about 50% of the listeners (Republicans) would be interested in the results at all.

Yes if the Vehicle is all-news and is operated by Cumulus or Merlin ;D ::) ;). Right now I have no proof that Merlin is coming to California. But I know Cumulus is running an all news station and it is basically a West Coast Merlin wannabe.
