FM News/Talk in Charlotte?

Like it or not, WFAE has FM talk all wrapped up. I know some of you will say it doesn't count, or they're not rated. I think a 4.5 share definitely counts. Having worked at both FAE and WBT, I can tell you that the folks at WBT have always thought of WFAE as their #1 competition. Anybody remember the crazy Bud guy who became GM after Kilgo for about 23 minutes? He wanted to LMA WFAE.

I think the real question is how much can another talker entering the market expect to bill? WFAE and WBT combined have about a 10 share. WFAE does sell underwriting, and they have one of the largest radio news staffs in the state.

WFAE is hugely successful! They have TV underwriters and car dealer underwriters, and they bill a bunch! Probably not as much as a commercial station, but a lot of agencies buy them for their audience, which Media Audit shows to be through the stratosphere in income, education, etc. I'm sure their line-up is on their website. Probably typical NPR Morning Edition from 6-10, and NPR All Things Considered from 3p-6p, with Marketplace thrown in somewhere. The thing I really like about public radio is their coverage of local news. Not just the fluff, but in-depth stories about business, schools, etc. You just can't beat it!

Way too many music formats yet to be aired in the market before any of the commercial FM's resort to news/talk. Charlotte is unique in that regard- more viable music formats than FM's.

My favorite thing about WFAE is how they take our hard earned tax dollars and spend it on very important stuff like a state of the art IBOC system that a handful of people can hear and a uptown--make that read--center city studio...

I was in the car the other day when Diane Rehm was on...She and two other guests were ganging up on a fellow from the Heritage Foundation on the subject of Kofi Annan...Not only is she almost impossible to listen to she has no idea what she is talking about...Somehow they got on the subject of Iraq...She said that a lot more people have been killed since the war started than when Saddam was in power. One of her guests that was on her side said that she was wrong and reminder her of the Iran/Iraq war...

This is the kind of stuff the Government wastes our tax dollars on...

test, Jefferson Pilot Lincoln Financial gets bigger tax write offs for holding producers to a 30 hour week than WFAE sees of your tax money. WFAE is one of the least dependent stations on tax dollars. Last I heard, about 7% of their budget came from CPB, which receives both private foundation and government funding, and was created by Richard Nixon, not a liberal wastrel.

Additionally, when WBT decided that it needed to be the GOP organ, WFAE gave space to Mike Collins, one of the more talented broadcasters the QC has had.

The crazy Bud you were thinking about was Bud Stiker.

I believe any Government funding is too much. If WFAE is a viable radio station it should be able to stand on its own...I wonder how much tax funding the station that produces Ms Rehm's show receives?

On a side note. After I posted my comments last night I looked up Ms Rehm. I understand she has a condition that causes her voice to be the way it is. While I stand by my comments that she is difficult to listen to I want to make it clear that I am truly sorry that she is inflicted with the condition that she has. I also stand by my comment that she is often blinded to the facts by her far left leanings.

I was at WBT when Randall Bloomquist came in a changed things around. In my opinion he was not brought in to move WBT more to the right but to clear out the old guard at WBT. Clark Brown decided it was time to make some changes and Bloomquist was brought in to do just that.

No one asked me my opinion but I thought and still think they made a mistake. I agree that Mike Collins is a very good broadcaster and WBT was lucky to have him. They should have kept him and Jon Robinson. I also think they should have given Henry Bogan the mid morning show and moved Hancock to the shift he has now. I don't think Henry would have retired if they had done that.

To move the tread back on track...WFAE is the FM Talk station in Charlotte. It would be difficult for any station to flip and compete.
