Fm news

am I the only one who misses FM News----101.9----NYC?

I miss the great laughs it provided daily. Had to be one of the
'worst radio stations I ever heard in a major market. I truly felt
sorry for the staff there. It may have worked with a more
hard news approach.

It was fun to listen to. In the early days, the announcers were constantly flubbing and ad-libbing, and there were a lot of promos for museums, parks, zoos, etc. instead of "real" commercials. There was a lot of "fluff" news and the overall sound was very lighthearted. I remember their "live, on-scene" coverage of Hurriance Irene consisted of one reporter calling from her home and describing what she saw out of her living room window! Later on, 101.9 tried to get more serious, and it ended up sounding just like a second-rate imitation of 1010 WINS.

WEMP(FM News) was a train wreck. What was Randy Michaels thinking? A good local news talk station with morning and afternoon newsblocks would have made more sense. I wonder if the thinking was along the lines of "we are on FM. Of course we will beat WCBS and WINS who are on the AM band". Toward the end the station was sounding better.Again, did Randy think a third all news station would work? New York is the only market where there are two profitable news stations. Washington DC is the only other city with two all news outlets, and WNEW is not doing well.

I did enjoy WEMP as something else to listen to. To me, WFAN simulcasting on 101.9 is a waste. That 660 AM frequency is one of the most powerful in the country. I know the only reason they are on FM is because ESPN runs their station on 98.7. Personally,I am not a sports fan, so 98.7 and 101.9 are two frequencies I never listen to.

I'd read about WEMP referred to as

A station run by 60-year old men trying
to get a female audience half their age....
Barbie News .....
'Chocolates? What's next -- nylons?' .....
The Kardashian Of Your Life format .....
Winner of the 2011 Miss Calculation Paegeant .....
'You've tried the rest, so here's .... another one' .....

Funny, though, how so many people in the industry (like me) are chronically moaning about
'nothing different' anymore in programming. And yet when WEMP came on it got critically
hauled to the nearest landfill before its on-air light got warm, different or no.

So many big-signal stations are aiming for that 30-40 sweet spot that there are not enough
formats to go around anymore. WEMP news was a niche format within a niche. Co-programmer
(Walt Sabo?) went for the exit so quickly that he probably didn't even cast a shadow.

As the FCC might have said, rolling its eyes upon receiving another call-letter change for this
traditionally jinxed frequency: 'Next?'

during hurricane Sandy I was without power for 5 days. I wondered how FM News 101.9
would have covered Sandy. I recall when FM News 101.9 began ---
the anchors seemed to even have trouble giving the correct time. I hope some day
people reveal why FM News was such a disaster on the air.

Paul Cavalconte -- who survived through many format changes on 101.9 -- handled the news format more smoothly than some of the big-name pros, including Gene Michaels who jumped ship from Shadow Traffic. FM News 101.9 was such a trainwreck that it made me feel sorry for them, giving up successful positions at other stations to join a format which was sure to fail.

not only was the FM News format very odd but the station seemed to have many technical errors.
Merlin media operated FM News 101.9---NYC. It stilll operates Talk radio 106.9 in Philllly but that
station was sold & soon willll be Christian AC. When 106.9 began-----it aired Sean Hannity much of the
day----- promoting itself as Hannity 106.9.

I imagine at some point ---- WINS, WCBS, KYW willl be on FM. I mean on HD-1 FM channnels. (not on
subchannnels as they are now. )
