FM Night bandscan from Vermilion, OH 3-7-12

Very interesting; I'd have to grab Radio-LOcator to name all of those stations. Seems like 92.9 is the clearest DX frequency there. I might have logged a very weak WGTZ Eaton-Dayton (and Springfield Alive) once while I was there. Didn't sound like any real DX. The CBC French station was loud, as was WRIF.

Here are the ones I heard that I found the most interesting.

88.5- Gospel? Possibly Gagetown, MI
98.9- Urban AC was probably WOWE from Vassar, MI
99.7- Religious- Family Life Radio- WUGN Midland, MI- 183 miles (according to Radio-Locator)
102.5- May be WIOG- Only 160 miles away, but not as strong as WUGN.

I personally had 107.7 WRKR when passing through Vermilion one time, but couldn't hear it here.

Think you had WBNS on 97.1 with sports. Country on 98.1...I'd have thought you would have WKDD there, but looks like Saginaw is a possibility. Probably not Lexington, KY though they arfe regular in Southwest Ohio.

97.1 is usually a toss-up between WREO/Ashtabula, OH (ac) and WXYT/Detroit, MI 'The Ticket' though have heard WBNS before though from here. Hard to tell which one it was here. WKDD is the usual occupant of 98.1 here and sometimes WDFM/Defiance, OH with a similar format. Sometimes the latter will replace WKDD and don't know it unless I catch an ID or local commercial. The Saginaw 98.1 is probably the one heard here.

Forgot WXYT had a sports format also on 97.1. These scans are very interesting, love to see more. There are some scatterred around YouTube, some from overseas.

Judging by your impressive WOWE reception, I would wager a bet that your country on 98.1 was WKCQ from Saginaw. I had enhancement to Detroit and the Tri-Cities this same evening.

Beginning to blow the dust off of the FM rig for the season. My goal is to log #2000! I'm at #1841 right now. If you ever need help with Michigan stations, I can more than likely ID them for you.

Was the 93.3 I was getting with rock/classic rock music WKQZ/Midland, MI? I suspect its that one since I had others from that area. Otherwise I would guess it to be WNCD/Youngstown.

Borderblaster-

I have Windows Movie Maker and a video camera given to me by my church. I may get around to making a video when weather conditions are up..

Cool scan! A number of these stations I pick up, when travelling to see family in the Sarnia area.

I'm rather surprised that 100.5 is empty, with London Ontario's Radio 2 outlet, CBBL, not coming through. The jazz program 'Tonic' should be heard, but for those of us who listen to jazz, we know there could be pauses in there... Perhaps a little more surprising to you is that the mystery signal on 101.7, is (100 kW) CKNX out of Port Elgin Ontario. The advert you hear, is for 'Allan's Fireside Grill', in Saugeen Shores, just south of Port Elgin.

Also, regarding 89.1, I believe that it may be the WKSU repeater, WKSV, out of Thompson OH. The piece of jazz we hear on 89.7, sounds like they could be the closing notes of what we first hear on 89.1

This could be a new DX game on the board, can you ID this station with 5 seconds of audio?

Looking forward to your video (maybe even different antenna settings?) Lawppy!

Thanks for the info on 101.7. Is that the station that they call '101.7 the One'? 89.1 likely was WKSV. Normally on 89.1 I hear WNZN with Spanish music. Their transmitters are only about 6 miles south south-west of me but they only seem to be on the air during the week and mainly during the day. As for CBBL on 100.5, it usually gets stomped out by 100.7 WMMS's IBLOCK but sometimes can be heard underneath it.

Border,

I make short videos for my church, but am using crappy online file conversion programs right now with watermarks and the sort. WMM would probably be sufficient for such a video, but the graphics are too big and blocky and would distract from the action.

The church is going to help me by going 50/50 on the purchase of better movie making software, so I could be running with the big dogs (at least when it comes to homegrown YouTube videos) with just a little time and some instruction on the movie software.

If enough people here would be interested in it, I would love to make short reception videos and share them with you. I already share my logs, so why not, right? I'd do different directions and post new ones once a week or every other week.

But back to the subject, good job on CKNX! That one sneaked right by me.. I actually assumed it was the Canton, OH station.

Buckeyes, yes that would be 'The One'. BTW, a slight correction, the tower for CKNX, is actually located just south-west of Walkerton, Ontario. I don't know where you live in Vermilion, but if you stood on the beach, at the end of Main Street, it's a 194 mile shot to the CKNX tower. Good snag, for that time of the evening!

Here are 2 more FM quick bandscans one during tropo to SE Lower Michigan and another during an e-skip opening back in May 2011:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgxX9JGTe8c&fmt=18 tropo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6RqBzmZ6MI&fmt=18 e-skip

In the one with e-skip I was able to ID '93.7 the Arrow' as KKRW/Houston, TX. The station on 102.5 with religious programming was e-skip from an unknown location and I suspect 91.7 was e-skip reception too. Both scans were recorded in Vermilion, OH.

Was that Es opening May 22nd? If so I had a ton of AZ, NM, CA and NV that day, as short as 694 miles. The opening was 108+ but never reached 2m.

It was, indeed on May 22, 2011 around 1PM EST when I recorded the e-skip opening. Texas to Ohio on 93.7. Still not sure where 102.5 was coming from as I have no 102.5s that have ever come in with religious programming around here.

If Texas was coming in for you at the time, there' a possibility that your 102.5 religious snag was Dallas' KGGR, however, that station is Afro-American centric and the speaker did not sound distinctively Afro-American.... :-\
