FM Pirate Busted in Ocala

Not anymore, we pulled Alex Jones after his CNN rant. But I don't need Alex Jones to know that our government is out of control.

Cedric: What did AJ say about CNN that would cause you guys to pull him? Didn't you guys used to run National Alliance stuff? :)

He didn't rant about CNN. He went on Piers Morgan on CNN and essentially called for an armed insurrection and screamed and shouted like a crazy man. It turned off a bunch of his affiliates.

Yes, he's done that before. Don't forget to buy "one of his powerful videos..."

The Florida law hasn't been enforced very often at all, and there is no record of any convictions or jail time at all in either of the other two states that have such laws, so there is no track record to say "your way doesn't work".

We'll just have to agree to disagree o this one, I guess. I am in favor of punishment for a crime but I am strongly in favor of the punishment having some relationship to the crime. The lack of enforcement might be related to the lack of enforcement of littering laws in the states that have gone over the edge with things like $500 and $1,000 fines. A reasonable cop might e inclined to write a fifty or one hundred dollar ticket but will simply not write a thousand dollar ticket for throwing an empty cigarette pack out of the window.

Maybe the FAB needs to re-think this and re-lobby to get the penalty to a reasonable level that can be morally and ethically enforced, as well as legally.

Fair enough. Good thread. I see you have a long list of stations you have been with - still in the business today? I am only about 100 miles from you if you are in Sarasota.

I recently moved from Sarasota to Manatee County. Retired. Smaller place. Lower utility bills. Lower taxes. I had actually "retired" after I sold off the last station in the early 90s, a small Florida AM, put the check in my pocket and worked hard at enjoying the beaches for a few years. A good friend from decades ago took over Clear Channel's Sarasota cluster in 1998 or '99 and...I won't bore you with the details...but he was in need of someone to handle the morning news run. I thought it would be fun. It was until he left in 2003 and CC brought in some clown to run things. I just had too good of a run in the business to put up with her crap. I resigned in mid-2004 and have enjoyed life to the fullest ever since.

Do I smell a good chat over coffee sometime soon? I'll send a private message here wit my contact info.

Pirate locking people out of their cars - apparently running 50KW FM on 104.7. Would you want someone arrested if you were locked out of your car by someone breaking the law?

RF does some crazy stuff.

Locking someone out of their car is a whole different offense altogether called theft or conversion or another person's property that is unrelated to running a pirate radio station. The only commonality is the person who locked people out of their cars was also a pirate radio operator. Not all pirate operators convert another person property to their own, nor do all thieves run a pirate radio station. These are two completely different offense perpetrated by the same party.

All I can say is WOW to whomever ran 50kw ERP illegally on 104.7. It reminds me of an illegal AM station in Alabama in the 1970s where the pirates ran high power on AM 540 from a barn. To say the least, that didn't last very long

If i was locked out of my car by an illegal radio operation, I would want them arrested and charged. Apparently it was a widespread problem due to the power level.

But here, IMHO, is the problem with busting pirates under state (not federal) law. Would you want local police to arrest *you* if RF-activated car locks aren't able to deal with your FCC-licensed *legal* 50KW FM on 104.7? Do you trust them to know how to tell you're legal? Do you trust them to *care*, when they have a gaggle of angry owners of poorly-designed vehicles?

Of course. So would I as I would not be very happy with anyone locking me out of my own car and depriving me use of my property.

By the way, I read the newspaper article regarding WLBE. It was very nice and very impressive. You are to be congratulated on a job well done with WLBE.

I also read the article on WLBE. Glad to see an AM station doing different things.

We had a show similar to the auction for certificates. Except we had a limited number of certificates, generally. The businesses traded advertising for the certificates, and the certificates were sold during an hour-long "marketplace" show. The concept worked pretty well overall.

We have businesses calling us to be on the auction shows at this point. We do 16 items twice a day five days a week, or about 160 items per week. It is a HUGE winner for us - we got lots of small businesses that would never advertise otherwise. We even get some big stuff we run multiple days, and have gotten extra sales from paying customers by adding them to the auction show. It doesn't work for every business, but restaurants, mechanics, and any other service or small ticket retail type business fit pretty well.
