FM Processing Question

local oscillator said:
At the risk of again bringing up a topic that has been discussed ad infinitum, I'd like to ask for opinions on a specific choice.

I have two analog processing options for a classic rock-formatted station: 1. Compellor + 8100A/1 + XT2 or 2. Compellor + Prisms + 8000A/1 with RCF-1 card. All units are recapped/updated/refurbished, etc. Either chain will go into a composite STL, composite clipper, and Digit exciter.

It's going to be one or the other, so digital boxes and other options aren't in the mix. Which do you prefer - 1 or 2 - and why? I'm sitting on the fence; I will greatly appreciate any and all input.

You expressed an interest in the Ariane. I know you want to run with the two options you gave, but do test other systems if you can, because modern processors are coming down in price and have a whole host of value added features that are missing from your suggested boxes. Why not consider a processor that has the Ariane integrated into a box with a six band limiter and other high performance FM processing features.

It can be configured to run as just an Ariane if that was your thing, but many users who want a classic rock sound build up the meat with the ariane, and dial back the limiter and clipper drives on the DSPXtra, creating an open but punchy sound.

They are less than $3k street price and would be worth testing, no obligation from SCMS.

Looking at it again, I noticed you have a Digit exciter. Make sure you have the composite "processing" turned OFF on the Digit. I saw that there's a composite clipper inline, so I'm assuming you do. That "limiter" in the Digit will rob at least 5% off your modulation and make the audio sound generally like crap.

Why don't some of you so called engineers stop overdriving your stations with loudness and let them breathe? Have your corporate overlords got you by the balls?

I've had a DSPXtra in service for well over two years. The Ariane is awesome. I still get comments from people who tell me how good the station sounds. It works for me...
