This is for Radiogeek2000 who requested my thoughts on FM overnight radio. Many of my comments will be music related or about the stations in general because there are few overnight jocks left to talk about.
.3 KOMP-Music and sweepers..no voicetracker. Sometimes I think just being a music machine sounds better than having a canned jock. Interestingly I believe KOMP is live and local on overnight weekends.
.1 KPLV-Music, sweepers, and hot new jingles. No voicetracks. PARTY sounds as contemporary as they ever have. I love Rihanna-Rude Boy...especially the part where she sings "take it take it baby baby". This song is so full of hooks. It's pop music at it's greatest. Rude Boy is Jamaican slang for street thug which goes to show that artistic excellence has no neccessary relationship to morality.
.1 KMXB-I expected voicetracks but once again it was all music, sweepers and promos. I enjoyed Jane's Addiction-Jane Says which is a little edgier than you would hear on a typical Hot AC. As I listened to Train-If It's Love, it struck me how long that band has been around...almost 15 years which is an eternity for pop music. MIX has played them (and played them often)right from the start. I like their songs and don't burn on them no matter how overplayed they become.
.5 KWNR-After Midnight with Blair Garner. This is the longest running overnight program on FM. KWNR has aired this satellite show since late 1997.
.3 KKLZ-Finally an actual voicetracker..it's Chad Michaels who has a friendly delivery. My impression was that local voicetracking was the norm on overnights. How wrong I was..only two stations do it..both Beasley FMs.
.1 KXPT-All music/no VT. This has to be the most consistent or unchanging station In Las Vegas. Everything sounds the same to me as it has for years. Same music library, stable jock lineup (they even have weekenders who been there forever), same 10 after laughter, same Sunday morning Jazz brunch, same syndicted shows(I love BC on Rockline.) The POINT is a constant in an ever changing world.
.5 KVEG-Wow a live jock on overnights. It's Mia Amor. She really works it with tons of phone calls and shout outs. She takes full advantage of doing a live show at these hours. My favorite music on HOT is the urban product that no one else plays...if anything it sounds fresh just becaue it's so underexposed. It almost sounds quaint to hear a straight rap song with no pop influence. They play a healthy dose of this on overnights. One that I heard the other night that I liked was California Swag District-Teach Me How To Dougie.
.5 KLUC-it's Nathan Fast, another live local overnight jock (and the only other one besides KVEG). I can remember when CBS was the last cluster to have all their stations live on overnights (even 100.5 when they were AC). Today Nathan is the only PIB during those hours. He does a interactive show..not just with phone calls but he also heavily plugs social networking sites which is important to stations these days. The last song I heard on Hot was the first song I heard on KLUC... "Eenie Meenie Mo Lova". What kind of timing was that?
Coming soon....100.5-107.9
