FM Reception Report from Brattleboro, VT

Hey all! I was in the north end of Brattleboro, VT today (Wednesday, June 25th) and scanned the FM dial with my Panasonic "Walkman", roughly 12 miles north of the Massachusetts state line. Here's what did and didn't come in:

Signal (G) GOOD (F) FAIR (P) POOR

(P) 88.5-WFCR Amherst, MA
(F) 90.7-Wxxx ??? [NPR] New Hampshire Public Radio
(F) 92.7-WKVT Brattleboro [Classic Rock]
(P) 93.9-WRSI Turners Falls, MA [AAA?] 93.9 The River
(G) 94.5-Wxxx ??? [NPR] Vermont Public Radio
(F) 95.3-Wxxx ??? [Country]
(P) 96.1-WSRS Worcester, MA [AC]
(P) 96.3-Wxxx ??? [Oldies]
(G) 96.7-WTSA Brattleboro [AC]
(F) 97.7-Wxxx Winchendon, MA [AC?]
(G) 98.7-Wxxx Brattleboro? [Country]
(P) 99.9-WCAT Athol, MA? [Progressive] Independent Radio Boston?
(P) 100.7-Wxxx Wilmington [Classic Hits] 101.5 Vermont's Best Rock
(P) 101.1-WGIR Manchester, NH [Rock]
(F) 101.5-WRSY Marlborough [AAA?] 93.9 The River
(P) 102.1-WAQY Springfield, MA [Classic Rock] ROCK 102
(F) 103.7-WKNE Keene, NH [Hot AC] 103.7-KNE FM
(P) 104.5-WXLO Fitchburg, MA [Hot AC]
(F) 104.9-Wxxx Keene, NH? [Country]
(F) 106.1-Wxxx Claremont, NH [Classic Rock] Q-106
(F) 107.1-Wxxx ??? [Country] 95.3 The Wolf
(G) 107.7-Wxxx Brattleboro [???] Is this a legal version of Radio Free Brattleboro of a few years ago?

As a footnote, WKNE-FM 103.7 of Keene, NH mentioned secondary coverage in Claremont, NH on 98.9 FM. Also, was I getting a slight enhancement from the southeast? It sure seemed that way.

you are right that 107.7 in Brattleboro is the new legal low power entity.. their license holder is a group called Vermont Earth Works. BTW.. next time you're in Brattleboro's "new north end" pop by the new TSA studios, things are taking shape six months after the move, and we love visitors.

Where is the studio? I'm usually in the area of Exit 3 with Vermont Transit and Hannaford Plaza. I often walk over the bridge into Chesterfield, NH as well.

90.7 WEVN Keene, 94.5 W233AR Brattleboro , 95.3 WPVQ Greenfield , 96.3 WPLY Walpole, 97.7 WSNI Swanzey/Keene, 98.7 WINQ Winchester/Keene, 100.7 WTHK Mt Snow, 104.9 WYRY Hinsdale, 106.1 WHDQ Claremont (From the top of ascutney), 107.1 WZLF Bellows Falls, 107.7 WVEW-LP (The tower is on a roof of a building downtown) Brattleboro.

I am surprised you didn't get WVPR on 89.5. They are sharing the common antenna with WHDQ with roughly the same power.
WNCH should have also come in, not as strong

In reply to where's the studio...it's on the river side of the old rollerdrome building near the bridge over the West River in Brattleboro. There's a stick and dish that should give you somelandmarks to look for.

Kma-
I am kind of suprised you couldn't get 101.9 from keene NH at least with poor reception.

if you get a chance if you go up route 9 up the hill on Hogback Mtn and through Mt. Olga the reception is amazing. another spot to be known is in Putney up in the hills. Route 9 between Brattleburo and Bennington has several amazing spots for radio reception especially if you might be hiking with a walkmen. My favorite up that way is 107.3 WAAF how it just cuts through the hills. (when it was on paxton reception was even better)

Not likely for me. I've only been on VT Route 9 west of Brattleboro once. That was in 1990 as I was heading east on an escorted day trip which entered the state on US Route 7, went to the Bennington Museum, stopped in Wilminton, headed east through Brattleboro and up I-91 to the Putney Inn at Exit 4.

Jamie? Did the above picture I linked work? It was taken at the edge of the Hannaford Plaza parking lot. The view is towards the southeast into New Hampshire.

Actually, the "Wxxx" was typed because I didn't know that station's call letters. I'm from Connecticut and Brattleboro is about the only part of the state I get to anymore. :(

Kma- sorry it took me so long to respond.. I am having the pleasure since I could not get a radio internship yet of Scrubbing toilets at a beach every weekend @ 7am as well as trying to hold on to 2 other jobs... I'll have to try your location with a walkman and car radio sometime...

not a bad picture. I remember once in high school 6 years ago camping out next to mt Olga in a state foreat (just west of the fire tower) and being able to get 107.3 WAFF a bit staticky but clear through route 100 on the mount snow valley. oh man I miss those jobs

That's right next to the Hannaford shopping plaza along US 5/VT 9 near I-91 Exit 3. As for my location, it's usually in a small area between there, the Vermont Transit terminal by the Mobil gas station and then over the Connecticut River Bridge into Chesterfield, NH. I wonder if going up the hill on NH Route 9 would help much?
