FM scan from Alpine, TX 8/28/16 - 8/30/16

Recently I was in west Texas for a few days to visit the McDonald Observatory and check out the Marfa lights. I was staying in Alpine and did band scans from the hotel and nearby area. The local band is very sparse, so it would be a great place to be during an e-skip opening.

I found only six local/semi-local stations and caught just eight more during some evening and morning tropo. Radios used were a ’14 Accord stock radio, CC Skywave and a tiny Insignia NS-HD01A.

90.5 - KLVW (tropo), K-LOVE, Odessa, TX (144 mi)
90.9 - K215CH (local), WAFR translator, Alpine, TX (1 mi)
91.7 - KRTP (local), Marfa Public Radio, Alpine, TX (3 mi)
92.7 - KALP (local), country music, Alpine, TX (3 mi)
93.5 - KRTS (local), Marfa Public Radio, Marfa, TX (34 mi)
94.1 - KZOR (tropo), current hit mix, Hobbs, NM (171 mi)
96.9 - KMCM (tropo), 97 Gold - oldies, Odessa, TX (144 mi)
98.3 - KPTX (semi-local), 98X - current & classic hits, Pecos, TX (81 mi)
99.9 - KBAT (tropo), rock, Monahans, TX (117 mi)
100.9 - KNMJ (tropo), classic pop/rock, Eunice, NM (148 mi)
101.3 - KMMZ (tropo), regional Mexican music, Crane, TX (120 mi)
102.1 - KFZX (semi-local), classic rock, Gardendale, TX (122 mi); I didn’t call this tropo because it was a regular; must be because it’s 100 kW @ 300m HAAT
106.7 - KCHX (tropo), regional Mexican music, Midland, TX (146 mi)
107.9 - KQLM (tropo), regional Mexican music, Odessa, TX (144 mi)

Later this weekend I’ll be posting an AM band scan from the area.

Nice work, Jim, and thanks. The stations have apparently blossomed out that way, because it once was a full dial of nothingness not all that long ago. Sure would be interested in reading your results on an AM scan from Alpine. Fort Stockton used to be it in the daylight, but it really opened up after dark.

I'd love to be there during a large meteor shower or Es opening. Probably make some impressive logs! Surprised you were getting KZOR alone from Hobbs. I'd think you would get 100KW KPZA 103.7 in Jal as well.

I heard nothing at all on 103.7, and unlike AM (mainly because of bad RFI at the hotel), I was able to do multiple full FM band scans.

During the outdoor "star party" presentation at the McDonald Observatory, we saw several meteors and a few had long trails. Too bad I didn't have a radio with me there!

Hope to have the AM scan posted tomorrow.
