Normally when I'm playing taxi duties for my mother, I let her tune around the dial. Tonight was one of those nights she hates, a night where I kept telling her, stop, go back, wait, don't change it!
First odd thing to happen was at 107.5, an EAS tone was on, and I told her stop, go back. After a few seconds I heard a tornado watch or warning for some places around and including Milwaukee. It then returned to automated Spanish religion, which I've heard on occasion in Springfield. I just figured it to be one of those godcasters running off a bird even though I don't believe the 107.5 in Springfield is licensed. A bit odd but alarms didn't go off in my head just yet.
Then on 107.9, instead of John Tesh on WEBE 108, or whatever top 40 one would expect from Kiss 108, there was some country countdown program, which faded in and out against Tesh, I was now suspicious that Kiss 108 had suffered a horrible fate (just kidding, I knew something was up). The country station didn't return before my mother couldn't take the noise blanketing WEBE 108 any further (Noise on WEBE is not normal here).
She cycled back to the beginning of the dial and mostly everything seemed normal until I heard Mariah Carey on 94.1?!? WHJY Providence would never be playing that! Sure enough, they weren't as WHJY faded in a moment later and then faded out overpowered by KXLP. THE DX IS ON! (and after sundown to boot!)
Except, I was taxi driver and had to finish my route, but after making my mother a bit upset by demanding she stop touching my radio, I was able to hear what seemed like 4 distinct different radio stations. I heard one called I-94 which I think might be WIAL from license Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and I thought I heard another station that didn't have as good audio quality as either WHJY or KXLP, which I found out is from Eagle Lake, Minnesota.
At this point, I reached our destination and DX from the house is crap, so that's it for tonight
*** Note after posting... I checked the song log for WIAL and the songs listed are the ones I heard tonight except it was 8:40 (9:40PM, my time) to get a more accurate view of when this happened.
