FM Sports Radio in Orlando?

Is it finally coming to House of the Mouse? How about a really nice city grade all sports FM...........puh-leeze.
;D

With COX already owning the Magic rights ... you'd think they'd make DBO-AM a fulltime sports station, so why not ESPN ... could probably tap into Channel 9's Sports Staff that spends what, a whole 2-minutes every evening on-air. Take the best of ESPN and put Scott Anez in the P.M. drive time, use Mike-n-Mike in the morning [using FM news/traffic to fill in some] ... maybe 9's sports report (who is it these days, that blond haired kid?) does a mid-evening talk show (7-9) when there's no NBA game.

As long as it replaces a hispanic or urban signal, deal!

In a market that is 40% Hispanic and African-American, very unlikely. The market doesn't even have a classic rock station anymore.

What are the chances of 102 Jamz becoming Sports?

There are plenty of top quality Orlando signals that are underperforming. A Sports format is a viable and sensible solution. CC/COX/CBS must be looking at this. Sports on FM just sounds better and more markets are making this move.

While I would love another classic rocker to come back, I'd sure welcome an FM sports.

Would you expound upon which Orlando "top quality signals" are underperforming?

And the answer is maybe one, 102 Jamz.... but CBS is not going to flip it to sports or sell it to ESPN. And neither are Cox or CC going to sell ESPN an FM signal.

So the only full-market FM left is the former WLOQ. WNUE would be a candidate, maybe even WPCV for the right price.

Actually I would be more inclined to think Disney will acquire another AM, namely 580 or 1270.

Sure, as evidenced by many on this thread, 102 Jamz. 12+ numbers have suffered, also strong signals like WTKS and WMFE are typically underperformers.

WMFE is non-commercial, so that's not a candidate.

WTKS? Underperforming compared to what? The format was created to support Howard Stern, and lives on now because it accomplishes the exact same objectives as an FM sports outlet would.... good numbers in men with no music royalties. In fact, CC often has a philosophy of protecting stations, and WTKS is probably the reason CC hasn't actually tried to do well with 740, it would primarily take numbers from Real Radio. So they run Fox Sports and Jim Rome, throw a couple of cheap local shows on and call it a day.

Trying to get rid of a CHR station is a double-edged sword. And that is exactly what Mix, XL and Jamz all are. XL is pure CHR. Mix is CHR with a little extra retro. Jamz is CHR with a little extra Urban (far less than when I was a teen, which is unfortunate, but may be more a testament to the state of the Urban format in general than Jamz itself).

But seeing which of those stations to get rid of might be barking up the wrong tree. Mix and XL consistently are the top stations in the area, and Jamz is still doing well. But if I were to target any of them, it would be Jamz. That CBS turned Jamz into just another CHR station is a shame (though, to their credit, there's a lot less talk during drive-time on Jamz than on Mix and XL, not that I don't like Scott and Johnny, respectively). I don't know how truly Urban Star 94.5 is in comparison to 102 Jamz.

That being said, I myself would target WPCV. I don't think very many people listen to any country outside K92.3. Either that, or open an new station in one of the open ranges in the market (93, 99, mid-103, mid-104).

Clear Channel is amazingly actually trying to make 740 better. Marc Daniels has signed on to return to 740 on July 2nd. Gonna be on from 9a-11 and eventuality till noon.

Coach is filling in this week for the morning drive - actually makes the station one you'd want to listen too in the A.M. for the first time in a long time (no disrespect to Fritz ... but bianchi needs to stick to ink)

That tells me that either 740 is going to be the new ESPN affiliate, or they know they are going to be competing against an ESPN-owned outlet on a better signal than 1080 was.

Probably not as much as Disney is - wouldn't they like to have an FM stick in Mickey's backyard for the right price?

Oh, and if Hall is going to unload WPCV, it had better be for a boatload of dough.
