FM switch off by 2015 says report

Is the UK DAB compatable with European DAB especially France? Also, the only problem with DAB is the reception is much more limited than FM radio.

Somewhat compatiable... depends on the receiver. The original DAB specification called for MP2 audio.

The problem with DAB in the UK is basically a lack of Band III space, broadcasters trying to cram in too much in the space that's available and not investing the money to roll out the extra transmitters.

Places in Europe where DAB is being rolled out have more space, and/or are using DAB+ which uses a more modern efficient codec.

I honestly don't think FM/AM will be turned off in 2015.

the UK uses the old style MP2 as opposed to DAB+ that uses AAC IIRC in other countries they have either scrapped DAB or gone for more modern version. as for bandwidth the BBC has the following on a single 1.5 MHz wide multiplex

BBC Radio 1
1Xtra
Radio 2
Radio 3
Radio 4
Radio 5
5 Live Sports Extra (not 24 hours)
6 Music
BBC 7
BBC Asian Network
BBC World Service

some music stations are on as low as 64k mono, coverage is not as good as FM and small stations are closing down as opposed to going on DAB due in part to the financial climate
