FM translator at 98.7

I'm clearly late to the party as this was posted on VARTV.com back in August but I just came across the story today. Does anyone have more details about this?

Blacksburg-based Positive Alternative Radio (PAR) is swapping its FM translator at 98.7 Belmont/Charlotte (W254AZ) to Clear Channel Media & Entertainment for an eight year lease on the HD3 channel of WBTJ/106.5 Richmond and WEND/106.5 Salisbury/Charlotte plus "a lease amendment." A CP (construction permit) has the 98.7 signal covering all of metro Charlotte.

I thought CC was maxed out with ownership caps? They already own 5 FM signals which is the max. Do FM translators count as an FM signal?

That also doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since most people don't even know what HD radio is. I think a translator would be a lot more effective since more people could pick it up.

What does the 98.7 translator currently "translate"? A translator has to translate an AM signal or HD2 signal. I always get 98.7 Simon when I tune to 98.7. What's on there now? Does PAR own other stations in Richmond?

Also, what would CC translate? They don't have an AM, and I don't see anything worthy on their HD signals currently.

Also, how would you know if a CP is issued since the FCC is closed and their website is down due to the federal government shut down?

The translator in Belmont relays Joy FM 88.1 WPIR out of Hickory. It's Christian Southern Gospel. The current translator is barely audible a few miles past the antenna. The antenna is located on a billboard in Belmont just off exit 27 of I-85 on Caldwell Dr.

Indeed. And I for one would not miss this translator. It makes it very hard to get Simon FM in parts of Charlotte. As stated before, this translator sounds terrible, has been known to go down, and sometimes sounds a bit off frequency. The quicker it moves to HD, the better. Charlotte does not need {yet another} FM translator devoted to ''spreading the word''. Steve.

So Clear Channel may offer another format on 98.7 translator signal? The Channel 96.1 HD-2 channel was carrying another CHR format, perhaps Z-100 from NYC because I have heard Elvis Duran on there before.

It's not Z-100, it CC's Hit Nation format which carries Elvis. You can listen to it via iHeartradio.

Some history: this station used to air Knights games. Or someone's games.

Without this station, would Charlotte even have Southern gospel?
