How much do they go for? Where can the bo bought? And how far can they reach (in miles) fo a cheaper one?

You can get a Part 15 FM xmtr for about $29 at Circuit City or such. Just plg in your source and pick up on any local radio in stereo.

Anything bigger, you'll need an eyepatch, a cutlass, a pegleg, and a parrot on your shoulder. As well as a big checkbook if you get caught.

There are tons of commercial grade used AM/FM xmtrs and exciters and antennae, even towers for sale in the classifieds of Radio World newsmagazine. You can get a free subscription or check online. But, hey, go legit, there's complete stations for sale including real estate in there too.

how strong is that?

im not looking into pirating anything not like a full time station or anything, just something to mess around with for the fun of it

That's how they start..."i'll just try a little", then before you know it your addicted and following in the steps of the religious radio pirate, the Reverend MacIntire.
He started out small and then bought a boat, installed a transmitter and floated up and down the Jersey Coast. Now that's a pirate! ;D

reminds me of 1967 ... before c b radio was "in" ( 1976 ) ...the guys that had their "boots on" , (linear amplifier) back in '67 , were thought of as the coolest guys .. lol ... they would de-tune 10 meter amplifiers to 11 meter ... they could use "skip conditions" , on top of that , and talk literally a thousand miles away , depending on the ionospheric cloud formation at that time ... instead of eminating 5 watts (derived) 3.5 watts actual output , these guys would broadcast on c b at around 500 watts , peak , r.m.s. .. back then , the f.c.c. was called "the candy company" .... !!!!! (-;.....but yeah , i know , it was a.m. , in effect , not f.m.

Ramsey Sells a built and tested FM100B for around $300 bucks.

There are units on EBay that go for anywhere between $100 and $500... have fun operating ill-legally, cuse broadcasting on FM that goes more then about 200 feet isn't legal.

im not opening a radio station or anything...i just need something to screw around with

try using that excuse with the fcc and see how far it gets you...

I know someone who ran a 1 Watt pirate in the Florence, NJ area and got SHUT DOWN!!

1 watt? how far does that go?like a mile?

was he playing like, uncut music or something?

and do people have to report you? or does the FCC find out on its own?

and how do they find you exactly?

1 Watt, into a properly tuned antenna sitting 20+ feet up will be listenable in a car, depending on co and adjacent channel interference.. 3 to 4 miles.

He was playing music.

They find you either by complaints from other stations, consumer complaints based upon interference ..

How do they find you? they DF(Direction find) the signal by using some equipment to detect where the RF is coming from.

The less power your running, the easier it is to find actually..

i thought it would be the other way around... so if your on a frequency far away from any local or distant station, you have a less chane of getting busted?

Dude, the FCC reads this board.... you're just itchin for a visit. No one ehre is going to give you advice on running ill-legally..

EYG, FAMOUS LAST WORDS: "I THOUGHT...." can get you a fine.

Did you ever hear of Google? Google around. There are LOTS of sites. Buy a Hamilton Rangemaster transmitter and be legal. Nobody here will do your work for you. Look for "part 15" on the fcc website. Don't be a pirate - FOLLOW THE RULES.

I run 4 certified legal (by an fcc engineer who signed an affidavit at each site ) part 15 stations. One has over a mile radius. BE CAREFUL and do it legally and you'll be fine.

as i said befor i dont intend on runnung an illegal station, im just getting info on FM transmitters

THAT RIGHT THERE.. shows your intention to operate ill-legally!

Pretty much...covering this topic on a discussion board is long and laborious.

If by "messing around", you just want to broadcast a mile or so away, a good 4 watt transmitter can be had off of ebay for $250. Add in a good, tuned antenna, and equipment to broadcast, you're looking at a $750 layout.

That being said (this is radio 101 here...) transmitter wattage means very little over height. Stick a 10 watt transmitter out your bedroom window, and you'd be lucky to make it around a block or so. Stick 10 watts on the side of a mountain as did an Arizona pirate, and you have almost full-market coverage.

I'm not even going to enter the piracy debate. Just settle on the fact that it's illegal...then again so is home taping (and it's killing music) ;D

Radio-X

so wait, home taping is illegal? as in copying off the radio to cassette or tv to VHS or DVD, or cd to cassette?

If it's for your OWN PERSONAL USE, it's ok. If you sell the tapes, then it's illegal.

i dont sell tapes, i copy my cds to 8 track and cassette so they can be played in my dads car and in his garage, i also tape from radio
