FM Transmitters

so wait, home taping is illegal? as in copying off the radio to cassette or tv to VHS or DVD, or cd to cassette?

Well, the RIAA and the NAB have a problem with XM and Sirius users recording songs off their satellite radios for personal use. How that's different than taping a song off of FM radio, I don't know!

From AllAccess.com:

Oh Yeah, Almost Forgot: FCC Adds $7K To Pirate's Fine
The FCC fixes an oversight and reaffirms an additional $7,000 fine on BRONX FM pirate SHAWN DEROUX. The Commission's initial Forfeiture Order against DEROUX on OCTOBER 13 affirmed $10,000 in fines for operating the pirate station but left out an additional $7,000 for refusing to allow a station inspection.

The order released today (11/6) reaffirms all $17,000 in fines.

I used an AM radio Mr. Microphone one time to "just play a little". I took the telescopic antenna off, connected very lengthy wire to the terminal, strung it all over my bedroom, used a 9 volt battery in place of the two AA that it normally accepted, and stuck the microphone inside a headset. The music piped into the mic radiated strongly all over the house and out into all sides of the yard for about 25 feet. Then, I walked down my mom's 1000 foot driveway, got 2/3's of the ways down, and found a spot where the signal somehow skipped to. My station came back in.

Then, I got greedy. I connected five 9-volt battereis in series and had 45 volts passing through the Mr. Microphone. I also took the mic outside and strung the wire around the branches of a tree. The mic started spewing smoke; it fried the transmitter.

No major loss though. I bought the mic at a liquidation sale when Hills went out of business in Cincinnati in 1991.

Pretty cool!

thats freakin sweet!
