FM100 - 40 years ago

If you stop the clock and freeze on a moment in time, those days of the launching of FM-100 Radio were so special. First, you had it being the nations second most powerful radio station at the time with 400,000 watts. With neighbors KAAY-AM in Little Rock and WLAC-AM in Nashville boasting 50,000 watts, FM-100 was blasting them away. Plus, WHBQ and WMPS in Memphis cut their power after dark leaving FM-100 with an huge open door for listeners throughout the Mississippi valley.

(okay all you radio engineers who differ with bandwith performance, don't dazzle us with all your AM vs FM wattage equations, just start your own darn thread)

Anyway, who can tell us the title & artist of the first record played over FM-100?

As it was given to me, FM-100's first song was "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones. That according to an engineer for KASU/Jonesboro (where I was going to school at the time - mid '80s). He was listening to the Holiday Inn "Dolly Holiday" show overnight on 100. Engineers were testing out stereo, and he was watching as the stereo light on his receiver kept going on and off. Then at 6:00 the stereo light came on and stayed -- ID, followed by the Stones.

Again, that's the story as HE told me (please don't flame the messenger ;D). If it's wrong, I'd love to know the real story.

A bit OT: Does anyone have a copy of the custom version of "We Built This City" (Starship) for FM-100?

Back to lurking....

I can pretty well assure you that it isn't in the control room anymore. As of a couple of weeks ago, the cart machines and the 6-foot cart carousel are gone. About all they were used for at this late date was playing the Ron and Steve Id's and drops.

For you first gen FM100 rockers... following the switch to rock, the Commercial Appeal ran a group shot of the jocks taken in one of the studios. I have figured it was the room which was AM Production when I was WMC-AM prodo director back in the mid 80's. Though I have seen group pictures of the original rock lineup, I have never seen that shot since it ran in the paper. Anybody else remember this?

Rob,

The only pic I recall ever seeing in the paper was one from around 1972 or 1973, and I think I saw it in the Memphis State campus newspaper, not the CA. I remember it because it had a pic of weekend DJ Sheila Hall among the others. If I remember correctly it was headlined "The FM100 Music People."
Wish I had saved it.............

Now, a friend has reminded me about a spoken FM100 station ID he says was done with the Beatles instrumental song "Flying" in the background. I sure don't remember that one - Jon or Greg?

One night Don Nix brought upto the station Harry Harrison(George's father) right after Bangla Desh, with Klaus Voorman. I interviewed Harry at length, and his insights about the early days, He said george's house was where they practised. Harry said, the other parents did't go for it. Maybe that was where id came from??

Super photo! There was a companion shot to that which was taken inside in a studio, and that would have been the one they ran in the CA.
In scrolling down your current blog, I saw a picture of the relocated Stax offices, and you were standing by a sign with the address "2693". Was that 2693 Union Extended? If so, the church is long gone, replaced by office buildings, and there is a recording studio located there now, Studio Center.

WOW this has been a great read. I remember moving back home to Memphis in '67. I was 14 years old and FM 100 was THE radio station for me for the next several years. The early years of FM100 really influenced my musical tastes forever. Wishbone Ash, The Illusion (The long version of Did You See Her Eyes !), The Groundhogs...remember this one http://img9.imagevenue.com/loc952/th_96560_groundhogs3744cover_122_952lo.jpg ;D

I would love hearing something new on FM100, then go down to Pop Tunes and give the record a test spin before buying it. I still have on cassette one of the specials that ran around midnight from FM100 from the mid 70s with the group Be Bop Deluxe...now that group was only played on WLYX at that time so I thought that was so cool to hear on FM100. I wish I had not edited the airchecks from it now :-[ Speaking of airchecks, does anyone remember the ID that went something like "WMC FM100 400,000 watts vertical 100,000 watts horizontal" or something to that effect, and would anyone have that one to share ??

Jon Scott you were my absolute favorite...thanks for the memories man ;)

The picture tha't floating around is not the original FM-100 staff. This picture was taken about 1970. Several had come and gone from FM-100 during that 2 years.

The photographs also ran in the Commercial Appeal and Press Scimitar in thier entertainment sections. Some of the photos were also used for TV commercials.

He was probably not one of the original cast, but I've heard an aircheck of Gary Phillips on FM100 circa 1969. Gary went on to WRBC (Gary and Granny) and WJDX (Gary Phillips and the all-night weridos) in Jackson, MS. Gary did mornings in the mid 70's at WZZQ, where he was, for the time, quite the shock-jock.
