FM100 & others heard along the Eastern Seaboard

Big sporadic-E opening yesterday afternoon. Reports are still filtering in – but, already I have seen reports of FM100 being heard in New Jersey, as well as other stations in our region bouncing all over the Eastern Seaboard.

‘Tis the season, of course. This stuff happens. But, what was happening around 5pm yesterday was unusually strong, especially for this early in the Summer.

The door swings both ways, of course. While our stations were being heard north, stations from there would be making the trip down here.

Openings often cluster; the same kind of stuff will likely happen over the next few days, though perhaps not as intense. And, yes… I realize how unbelievably geeky I appear for posting this.

the vhf propagation map had a huge red starfish shape over the east on it yesterday but it wasn't quite to Memphis when i checked

we should share the links we watch...

I have lost several good links over the years

when i was a teenager i spent my summers waiting for DX and twisting an fm antenna around trying to log stuff

Yeah, the "starfish" made it to Memphis. Looks like the "E cloud" was centered over Huntington, WV. In fact, I saved a .jpg -- very cool.

I spent the opening on 144 MHz, working several guys from MD to MA. Again -- yeah. Geeky.

At the risk of being, well, real geeky, what antenna setups are yall using for chasing the DX.

In my previous life in the engineering community I had a set of stacked 10 elements and a dipole mounted at 30' outdoors.

Well, I am not a serious FM DXer. Sure, if the band opens, I might look around, but I am a VHF-centered ham. What little FM DXing I have done has really been mostly in the car. Sporadic-E tends to be very strong at times, so little is needed.

TV? A Radio Shack outdoor antenna in my attic, surrounded by some VHF ham ground planes. The major ham stuff is outside (much on the ground waiting to go up the tower), but I won't bore you too much with that.

Back when I was in high school, I used a 6-element yagi for FM at ~30'. It worked surprisingly well.

I missed all of the good DX'ing? My flux capacitor was not working, something to do with the inability to reach the correct number of jigawatts (sp?). ;D

I had a set of stacked 10 elements

Usually I have two sets of 4 stacked along with bacon instead of ham and a couple eggs over easy on the side...but that's just me.

Geeky?
Why not at all...
It's very inter.....esting....to....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......

back when i was in high school i used a Radio Shack VU 210 at 40ft.
it was used for FM and TV DX'ing

These days I usually notice DX when I'm in the car. Nothing great at home for DX since I am a renter.

When I was on the air many years ago at FM100 I got a call from a pizza place in Toronto that was listening ( I did ask them to FedEx a pizza but it never arrived)

Another very nice opening around lunch today (the 4th). Reports are still filtering into the geeky lists to which I subscribe. Among what I have seen so far -- WHBQ-FM was heard in Ontario.

That's pretty unusual. A Class A near the top of the band.

Also Kix-106 and Hot 107 heard in Western Vermont.
