FM100's Steve calls Rock 103

Did anyone else hear Steve C. calling the Wake Up Crew this morning around 7:00? He called to talk about Bev getting fired, since he knows how she feels.

They talked about how FM 100 hasn't even mentioned that he's gone.

Yeah, I heard that... when I first heard his voice, I was like NO WAY!!! I recognized it before Spencer did... that was very classy of Steve to call.

I thought so too. Steve is a classy guy. Everyone I know that knows him says he's a cool dude, and didn't deserve what he got after 25+ years of working for Suck 100.

Huh? Didn't deserve what he got? I think Conley's a great guy. That said, he got what seems to be a pretty hefty paycheck for years. The only obligation CBS had to him was to pay him what they'd agreed on. Their name was on the license, not his, so it was THEIR radio station to operate how they saw fit. They were NOT obligated to keep him simply because it was ''morally right'' to do so. CBS, Entercom, CC, etc are in the business to make money. If they determined that he wasn't worth what they were paying him, then they had the right to cut him loose, as long as they paid up. They weren't obligated to do anything else....I hear they waived his noncompete! How often does THAT happen after working someplace for nearly 30 years? It sounds to me like Steve actually got a pretty fair shake. I hate to hear that somebody's not working...I'm presently not working either...but to say that CBS somehow owed Steve the right to continue working there is rediculous.

Keef59 : Yes, it's all about money. But how would you feel if you gave almost 30 years of your life to something, and then one day they changed the locks and put your things in a box at the curb..... And then no one ever mentioned you again. That's basically what happened.

Yes, it's nothing personal from the company's point of view, but it IS personal from the individual's POV.

Dang! Someone called me (about 10 seconds too late) and I missed it!

IMHO A good corporation will do everyting it takes to make money with the exception of hanging its employees out to dry. There are maybe 5 of those type corporations out there, and none of us can get a job there because nobody leaves!

My opinion of "he didn't deserve this" is he didn't deserve to be immediately wiped out of everyone's vocabulary.... at least Spencer told the listeners what happened and gave them the chance to grieve and say their good-byes.

I was summarily dismissed by a station after several years in a key on-air position. They didn't allow me to say ''goodbye'' either. Do I care? No. If I had my way, I'd not be given the chance
to say goodbye but would LOVE it if they would have waived my noncompete. But they didn't.
Still, the checks were big and they never bounced, and ultimately, that's the only obligation they
had to me. Their obligation to the audience and the advertisers and the stockholders is to
control the perception of the ''change'' to minimize damage. There's nothing wrong with broadcasters being in the business to MAKE MONEY. If they were in the ''art'' business, like
radio was in the 70's, then guys like Conley wouldn't earn a good living. The station has to
continue doing business and there's nothing wrong with that, either. Steve's in a good
position under the circumstances...if WMC did waive his noncompete, he's not particularly
concerned about saying ''goodbye'' as much as he is saying ''hello'', on another frequency.
Hello, Kim? He'll be fine. When anybody loses their job, it's unfortunate.....I don't have a job
either....but the radio station completely met it's obligation to Steve by paying him, and they went over and above what they had to do at the end by waiving his ''sit-out'' period. I applaud them for that.

Much of what you're seeing here has been going on for years in other businesses. How many people over the years have worked for a company for decades and gotten pushed out right before retirement? As an example, the company my father works for has NEVER had anyone retire from it! The fact that he's about three years from retirement scares him to death. How many companies promised their employees pensions only to take them away and leave them with nothing just a few years away from retirement? The fact that this was happening so often was one of several reasons for the 401k.

What makes this situation so unusual is that Steve was able to work at the same station for as long as he had. Lasting more than a few years at any one station has always been a rarity. I've never held a radio job at the same station for more than three years, and I don't know many who have. I certainly agree that it's a shame that two quality talents like Steve and Bev who gave so much to their stations and their employers got rewarded for their loyalty the way they did. However, I also agree that, as someone who has done more than just radio, this is a pretty common occurrence in business in general. No, it's not just; it's just the way things are done.

Absolutely Kent - 20 years ago I weathered rumors about our company shutting down while management was SWEARING we were solid but uh, could you move your elbow so we can get that typewriter off the desk.... there's nothing quite like getting to work only to be greeted by a padlocked fence around the plant. And let's not forget the drastic down turn of the real estate market after 9/11 when I was let go because they couldn't afford me anymore - I pretty much hit bottom... but see, you guys never knew it, you didn't know I existed to even CARE if I had lost my job.

But we hear these people every day, listen to them tell jokes, talk about their kids and they make us smile... we get attached to these people and when they disappear suddenly, we're dumbfounded and a little lost. As my nick says, I'm just a radio fan, have been since the days of sitting in a tree, listening to the Beatles, the Monkees and Bobby Sherman. I still miss the Emperor Charlie B. Watson spinning the hits on my school bus radio (yeah, we were THAT cool), I can still hear Steve Conley telling me that President Reagan had been shot, and I still have Spencer's voice jarring me out of a migraine haze saying there was a second plane to hit WTC... With all of the recent transitions in radio nationwide, it just makes my heart a little heavier watching something I've loved for so many years die.

That's exactly it!

Speaking of those memories...This was right before FM became big that I remember this. I have the honor (or not) depending on what you thought of Rick Dees... using me as a freakin' joke on the radio when I was in the 6th grade...lol

I was calling into 56HBQ The TOP BANANA...lol just to request a song. When Dees answered he acted overly excited and asked me my name. Being a little kid thinking this was cool I said my full name not realizing that he was putting me on the air. He said so (insert my name here) your my lucky caller! YOU WON!!! I got all excited and said ...WHAT DID I WIN?? He said You've just WON a solar powered dryer!!!!!! Long pause...I said GREAT not knowing what to say and being a bit confused about "the dryer". Then he says yes...such and such...IT'S A ROPE BETWEEN TWO TREES!!!! I immediately hung up!! I was ssssoooo embarrassed. The next day at school about 6 different kids came up to me laughing...pointing...it was YOU!! I didn't think I would EVER live that down. Pretty sad stuff for me at the time but I think it's hysterical now.
Radio is just not radio anymore. They want everything to be generic and boring now.
