FMeXtra

ChiefEngineer said:
Even if it took an expensive soundcard or a seperate soundcard that could be directly injected FM Extra support would be something you could hang your aht on. The receivers are out there but the encoder is 10k.

Make it it;s own product for a second computer.

Ready to purchase.

If I understand you correctly, you want an FMeXtra encoder running on a PC, correct? And it can be on a separate computer?

Yes!!

The Fm Extra "encoder" now sold is a compter and software. And it is pricey.

I understand the issue is the ability to generate both stereo sca and the FM Extra sca. If one had the Extra software as a stand alone device this could be injected at the studio into a conventional processor such as the Omnia. this way one is not dependent on both eggs in the same basket. A step further and a resistor network to combine the Breakaway FM and this new application would also be possible.

Injection at the studio allows creation of several new services with no investment in STL (use the existing STL path)

Love the breakaway look and have heard great things. The Extra software was breifly mentioned in discussion of this. Too difficult to combine the two.

We have been ready to proceed with two formats but the investment price is too high.

The problem with extra is the need to purchase their encoder and it is bundled with many Aruba radios. If one could purchase the Aruba radios seperately this would be a good thing.

Now the Extra has one stereo and two mono channels allowing encoding of the stereo signal in the same mask.

And if someone could encode a digital signal compatibale with HD in the hybrid mode that didn't infringe on Ibiquity's patent.....

If you want a separate stand-alone PC with FMeXtra encoding running on it, then the encoder that DRE Inc. offers is exactly that!

The price that you pay is not only for the PC - it's the licensing cost for the FMeXtra system, HE-AAC encoding, software, etc. I'm pretty sure DRE can supply you the software only, but the price most likely won't change much. The same is for iBiquity. You would like to use a propriety system that somebody developed, but would not want to pay for it. I'm afraid it doesn't work that way...

I'm also not sure why do you mix any kind of processor in the same basket with SCAs, such as FMeXtra. Processor doesn't have anything to do with SCA (other than processors having a SCA input to facilitate subcarrier injection on their output). But you can just the same insert the SCA on the exciter. FMeXtra in particular doesn't need anything from an FM processor, because the idea is to transmit different programming on FMeXtra, so you would feed it with a separate audio than it goes on your analog FM signal. That SCA audio would need to be processed by a separate (HD) processor.

The reason no one is using the thechnology wholesale is the licensing. Extra supposedly has an "open" license and HD has a "hybrid" mode allowing other applications to be used by broadcasters. the discussion is a result of a previous post indicating that extra could be generated on a PC card.

The R and O for "Digital" allows broadcasters "wide lattitude" for digital services.

Since we have the ability? Why not use the open license or hybrod mode to generate our own open license digital to allow EVERY broadcast station tha ability to use it?
