I wonder if that means a format change is in the works. Maybe sports talk for the
little port city?

Will the addition of Mancow help KSTN-1420?

I am friends with a staffer at KSTN-1420 and he told me about it but told me not to say anything since at that time it was not a sure thing. Also they were toying with the idea of going Talk but Clear Channel must have gotten wind of it since they switched 1280 to Talk via KFIV-1360 Modesto. But change is in the wind upcoming for KSTN-1420.One thing for sure, Knox LaRue's children are doing alot more for those stations than Old Knox himself in the last 20 years.Piolin has brought big ratings for KSTN-FM 107.3 but will Mancow do the same for KSTN-1420?

KSTN-AM deserves a lot of respect. It's the little station with the big playlist, and the music sounds damn good for having older-than-average AM processing and transmitting equipment. But, all must change eventually.

I have been a long time listener of KSTN, and remember vividly the classic Top 40 battle between KSTN-1420 and KJOY-1280. I am very impressed with KSTN's current playlist also. The Power Oldies format of KSTN is more of a Variety Hits format than Jack itself.KSTN has a playlist extending from the late 1950's to the 1990's playing a mix of Doo Wop Oldies of the 50's, Disco, Classic Rock, Alternative as well as an occasional Country tune. When the change happens, I will miss the Power Oldies format. As I have written, I have been kept in the dark recently concerning what is happening, though I knew about Mancow, I was just sworn to secrecy about it. With the recent change of KWSX-1280 to Talk, The LaRues scolded all staff about any leaks that may have happen. So I understand why my friend won't say anything else.I am just waiting for Morning Man John Hampton to make the official announcement.Question is what will happen to John since he has been at KSTN since 1979. Will he do the local news briefs for the Mancow show, or will he be moved to Afternoons or will he retire? Only John knows and hopefully he'll let us know soon.My guess of the new format if and when KSTN changes? I say Sports Talk. I also believe it will be "The Sporting News" Talk Network as that is the same network as the LaRue's Fresno radio station, KXEX-1550, has. I don't know if they'll have local sports talk? I also wonderr if KSTN will retain the local Religious programming they have on Sunday Mornings? Only Time Will Tell.

Mancow starts Monday, Format will not change!

It's official! Mancow in the morning and Power Oldies the rest of the day! Mancow starts on Monday, Feb. 13 at 5:AM but the Power Oldies format remains unchanged. No format change looming in the foreseeable future. One question remains unanswered. What is the future of John Hampton?
Edited by Floyd on 02/11/06 03:46 AM.

Let John do the afternoon show! He is perfect for it and he wouldn't have to get up early anymore!

After hearing the annoncement that Mancow was starting this Monday, I called John up. I asked him what his future at KSTN would be? He told me that he will continue working at KSTN but in a different capacity. He is not going to do afternoons but couldn't say anything more. My guess is that he'll do local news briefs during the Mancow show.Mancow's Morning Madhouse will be on the air Monday-Friday mornings from 5:AM-10:AM.One thing that is funny about this situation,is that 3 years ago, The late Knox LaRue was interviewed by The Stockton Record and said "that as long as he owns KSTN, he would never replace John Hampton at all as Morning Man, not even with Howard Stern". Well now that his children operates KSTN, they bring in the big guns from out of Stockton. For as long as I can remember KSTN-1420 never had any Syndicated or satellite programming outside of their studios(with the exception of the news). They were 100% Live and Local, not even voice tracking.Since LaRue's children got ahold of both KSTN's, They snagged rights to both the Stockton Ports as well as UOP Tigers Basketball on 1420 as well as getting the syndicated "Piolin en la Manana" for 107.3. Piolin has pushed the FM station up to #3 locally and they are hoping Mancow will do the same for 1420. Only Time Will Tell.

KMIX in Stockton has Piolín en la Mañana.

From AllAccess on February 1...

Piolin Gets 8 Entravision Affiliates

Piolin
ENTRAVISION is picking up UNIVISION RADIO's EDDIE "PIOLIN" SOTELO for mornings at eight of its stations, including RADIO TRICOLOR affiliates KXPK/DENVER, KPVW/ASPEN, KMIX/STOCKTON, KMXX/EL CENTRO, and KRNV/RENO, SUPER ESTRELLA affiliates KLOB/PALM SPRINGS and KAIQ/LUBBOCK, and "JOSE FM" affiliate KRCX/SACRAMENTO. PIOLIN, who replaces ABC/SBS' RENAN ALMENDAREZ COELLO (EL CUCUY) on the RADIO TRICOLOR and JOSE affiliates, is based at UNIVISION's KSCA (LA NUEVA 101.9)/LOS ANGELES.

Day One: Mancow starts at KSTN with little fanfare!

Well day one went well for Mancow on KSTN-1420. Personally I don't care for Mancow's humor(The show reminds me of a cross between "Howard Stern" and "Bob & Tom"), so I plan on not listening to the show. It did sound weird hearing a show like Mancow's on KSTN. If by chance, Mancow does succeed on KSTN and lift that station to the Top 5 in the ratings, expect another station(A Corporate owned one) to raid Mancow(Like Entravision did to KSTN-107.3 and snagging the rights to "Piolin en la Manana" for KMIX-100.9). As for Former Morning Man John Hampton, he is still there doing the local weather reports during the commercial breaks.

DAMN I've been gone a long time. Guess I should follow this board more closely.I worked at KSTN in the late 80s, and in the late 90s for a while. Lots of fun. But what a thing to hear just before going on the air. Cognitive dissonance. Best to John and everyone there. (Bugs Bunny head shake sound)
