FN MTV

Apparently, MTV now has a Friday night show called FN MTV that showcases "MUSIC VIDEOS" (WOW!), live performances, and interviews. Starts tonight at 8. This is good for them. Glad to see they revolve their primetime schedule around music again.

From the website:
If bringing back more music videos on MTV wasn't enough, FNMTV gives YOU the power to review and react to the newest music videos – and get seen on MTV! If you can do that dance, or sing that song, upload it. We're showcasing your videos alongside FNMTV music videos played on MTV all week long.

At first glance, I thought the choice of the "FN" name might be their response to the people who say "F'n MTV never shows music videos anymore." But - duh - after seeing the logo on the Web site, I see that "FN" means "Friday Night" :)

Over the years, the rationale I've heard for MTV not showing music videos was that they didn't generate the ratings that the suits were looking for (it was probably more of an issue with time spent viewing vs. total number of viewers/cume.) Apparently the reality shows did a better job of delivering those numbers. But perhaps not so much anymore.

Well music today sucks, so in a sense it would be hard to be the old MTV anyway, but what started to effect the ratings was the 10 minute long ad breaks after every 2 videos.

Interestling, I've read, but havn't been able to confirm (but it does make sense), that it was really the music industry that killed MTV. When mtv first came on, they didn't have to pay for the music for the first few years. The network boomed during this time. However around 1985, that ended.n To cover costs mtv added more and more ads. ratings fell, so they started adding cheap programing during prime viewing hours (which saved them money, as the higher the ratings, the more they had to pay to the RIAA). So basically, thats why MTV ended up only havning videos during overnights. It cost them the least amount of money to air.

Simularly, this has effected spinoff networks such as MTV2, and VH1 classic. They start off small, and able to air videos all day, but as they get popular, which MTV2, and now vh1 classic has, it becomes more and more expensive to air videos. Thus why VH1 classic airs crappy vh1 countdown shows all the time now.

Again, I read this somewhere, but havn't been able to confirm it, but like I said it makes sense.

I bet royalties is the main reason why I see the same ten videos repeated over again in their overnight airings. MTV shouldn't call themselves "Music Television" if RIAA causes them to move away from music videos. Rather, the channel should be rename "Mainstream Television" since just about everything they do or show relates to the mainstream culture.

Friday Night videos - the old becomes new.

Who knew?

In checking today's listings, "FN MTV" is scheduled to run not once, but twice today.

So in that regard, apparently the "F" can indeed also stand for that four-letter word...

Or WET - White Entertainment Television since they only show rich spoiled white people.

I stopped on it merely because it listed as "F'n MTV" (verbatim) in my DirecTV program guide... I didn't catch the "Friday Night" reference until I read this post.
