FNX gone national

It looks lke Boston's only locally owned station is now moving into other markets. I heard an ad for NYU continuing ed and some place in Jersey as I listened to their top-notch stream last Friday. I honestly see WFNX becoming the nation's, or at least the northeast's, only alternative stream.

Other Boston immediate-area locally owned stations are: WNTN, WJIB, WUNR, WBIX. Then thee's the college FM's.....

Let's not forget about the Greater Media stations (WROR, WMJX, WBOS, WTKK, WKLB) (Greater Media is based in Braintree). Also, WXRV is locally owned.

Besides the fact that there are at least two dozen locally-owned stations in Boston, what makes you think WFNX is being distributed nationally just because they're airing ads for NYC businesses? There are lots of people in Boston who are about to uproot and move to (or BACK to) NYC for college this week. Similarly, lots of Boston businesses buy time in markets where lots of college kids are coming from.

Well the reason I think I'm hearing adds for 1-2-3 burger bar over on tenth ave, is that, whenever I log on to the internet, WFNX online can tell my location because of my IP address. The brain trust over at WFNX seem to own a top notch technology. It seems to me as if WFNX is using this technology to widen its reach. By using IP as a flag, they can instantly sell local ads to local listeners, irregardless of the location of the network.

With that said, I'm not expecting to see the WFNX radio network sponsoring shows over at Studio B or the Bowery Ballroom....yet.

I just find it interesting they are selling local ads out of market, if that answers your question?

right, i know there are loads of college/community that have to be locally owned by definition basically.

but I assumed he meant on the commercial side, in which case I count about 7, missed a couple you posted. and yeah, I think WAMG would count, even though it's ESPN, I think it's a local owner.
