Follow-up interview with Mike McConnell posted

Hi there--a while ago, I posted a thread about doing a follow-up interview with Mike McConnell, and it's finally posted. I asked him questions early this year, then some serious stuff happened in my offline life, so I put off doing anything more with it. I asked him another question today, and it's finally done. Thanks to those folks here who showed interest. Enjoy!

Today's interview:

The previous interview that he did when he first went to WGN. It was a very popular one!

Thank you very much for posting your interview. I listen to his podcast daily. He sounds a lot more comfortable now that the Chicago folks are getting use to him.

His podcasts seem to be very popular.

Mike still has fans in town who call in to his show on WGN. It would be interesting to know what percentage of his podcast downloads are from the Greater Cincinnati Area. I'm sure it is pretty high.

Thanks. I haven't heard his replacements, but a few people have said that time slot hasn't been as good since he left.

Great job on the followup, Margaret!

Yeah, I don't keep an eye on the Cincinnati market as much as I did in the past...I made a decision to focus on the "home turf" of Northeast Ohio because, well, that's where I am. :D

Trying to cover Cincinnati from here was difficult, since I didn't really have a sense of the "lay of the land" outside of a familiarity with, well, WLW. Ask Cleveland traffic reporters about that, if Kiese's recent post is to be believed.

But I always thought the hand-wringing in Chicago over McConnell going to Chicago and WGN was a bit overdone. He was lumped in with his former WLW stationmate Bill Cunningham, and they were presented as basically the same kind of host. Willie's a bomb thrower, and McConnell is more measured. I know that even in Cleveland.

I wish we had someone like Margaret doing this here in Ohio. I'd be the natural person to do it up here, but my voice will never be attached to anything connected to OMW, so, sorry.

Thanks! My parents grew up in NE Ohio and my grandparents lived in Canton, so I feel like I have a connection there. My mom often talked about Ohio (especially Massillon), and my dad talks about it all the time (especially Canton). When he was in high school, he was offered an on-air job at WHBC, but he didn't take it. That was in the 1940's, when radio was still vibrant :-\

I would like to interview people in NE Ohio. I'm trying to get my dad to make a trip there with me, but if I don't go there, I can do interviews via phone. Let me know :)

I would like to interview Bill Cunningham sometime, for sure.

Margaret and OMW? I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

OMW: have your people call my people :p

I'd love to help you if you do stuff up here, Margaret. I, at very least, could suggest interview subjects and help you with some of them. (Probably not with others. :D)

I was thinking of going there later this summer with my dad, but I have no idea when, or if, it's possible. Until then, I guess it has to be Skype or telephone...if you want to send me a message with suggestions :-\
