Follow up question.. which TYPE of news do you like?

OK let's follow up John's question with another one.

Which TYPE of news do you like?

Do you like flashy, fast paced, glitz news? (You get more stories for the buck)
or do you like slower paced news, with longer more indepth stories (you get less stories for the buck).

Typically the first type is for the younger demographics, where the latter is for the older demos.

What do you like?

(and please, I don't want this turning into a Providence TV news flamewar)

My favorite news programs are BBC World News on WGBY 59, and RAI TG1 (via satellite from Italy). BBC News has no commercials, and TG1 has few, and they both feature intelligent stories and classy production.

To be honest, I'm not attached to any local news program, I find them all annoying. Less stories for the buck would by my answer though, I don't care about all the accidents, cheezy local news, celebrity news, etc. I'm also in my mid 20's. I'll actually watch NBC Nighty News in place of a local news show.

I guess it depends on the time of day and the relative importance of the day's news. If a big story is involved, or when I have the time, I much prefer a more thorough newscast. But, if time is short and I just want to catch up on the news, then a more fast-paced newscast fits the bill.

To give an idea (I live in NH), I prefer WMUR's News 9 for local stories (a more thorough newscast) - yet go to 7-News on WHDH for Boston stories.

By the way, for an area that probably would translate to a simiar market size as Albany, NY - NH is very lucky to have WMUR. They do a VERY thorough and well executed newscast, with good talent and nice big market graphics. It may not look great compared with Boston newscasts, but it would give any of the Providence stations a run for their money!

In my mind, BBC News is unmatched anywhere. But, in this country, news has become a source of entertainment, not to mention ad revenue.
Definitely two different types of news.
If I want local news, I'll usually tolerate WTNH, Channel 8 in New Haven.
World events, BBC wins by a mile.

I have to agree on the above. One of the more pleasanter diversions of waking up at 4:30AM [EST] is watching NBC's early newscast with Christine Johnson. That woman is not only attractive, but she never seems to have "a bad hair day?" Every now and then she might (verbally) mess up an intro to a story, but she recovers very quickly. And SHE'S NOT AFRAID TO (OCCASIONALLY) LAUGH ON THE AIR!

EARLY TODAY viewers are lucky to have her....but then again, so are her husband and children.

Well I guess I break the rules (above)? Because I ENJOY THE FASTER PACED NEWSCASTS while my age falls into the 'older demos' numbers.

The only minor objection I have to the 'faster paced news' is when the teases delivered by an anchor are more exciting than the story content itself! While I'm sure the ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT approach has entered many of the local newsrooms, I have noticed teases for supposedly news-oriented stories that become nothing more than "marshmallow fluff!" [ET began pulling this nonsense several years ago which the primary reason I've avoided the show...and get my "entertainment news" from more reliable sources! Sorry, Mary H!].
