Food Network The Latest Cable Network To Concentrate On Reality Shows

In fact, a decision for such a network is so bold, it warranted being the top story in the New York Post's entertainment section today:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/03132009/tv/hard_to_swallow_159254.htm

Excerpt:

By sticking the traditional cooking shows on the back burner in favor of food-prep competition shows like "Chopped," the network is risking its soul.

If this sounds familiar, it is.

MTV used to be a 24/7 music video channel when it premiered in 1981. By 2009, it is the network of reality behemoths "The Hills" and "The City."

Has the Post been in a coma for years? Helllo....McFly.

Food Network has been doing shows related to food that aren't recipe shows in prime time for quite some time now.

Here's a thought--maybe, just maybe, people interested in food topics like more than just how-to-cook shows. You know, maybe they did some research and found that a good portion of them have related interests. Perish the thought! Moreover, the entire MTV/VH1 comparison is faulty because all of the shows they do are built around the food theme.

Kind of logical really, that maybe at 9 pm, folks don't need to see how to cook chicken, but a foodie might enjoy a show about dining while on a vacation, or this history of types of food.

And is the writer seriously worrying about the networks driving away their original fans? I was an original-era MTV fan. They're SUPPOSED to have driven me away. I'm not in their target demo anymore. And it's flipping 2009 people...a channel playing music videos in an on-demand world is beyond illogical if you want to be anything more than a minor curiosity.

I definitely like Unwrapped, which has been on for several years and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. They're the two shows that got me started watching Food Network. I also like the food shows on the Travel Channel like Food Paradise and Man Vs. Food.
