Footbaal on 95.3

95.3 is airing the Coppell-Euless Game.

This perhaps is the worst sounding (content and technical) high school broadcast I've ever heard.

I'm guessing someone bought the time. Who is the bozo responsible for this?

Are the broadcasters a couple of high school kids?

I guess you can't expect a whole lot since it is just high school football...not exactly a ratings monster.

Who's the bozo that spelled football as footbaal?

bozo
That would be one Mr. Ken Jones (Owner - Operator). He actually had that title on his business card when he was still out in Terrell running the "Real Country" format on the then KTLR-FM 107.1.

bought the time
Your guess is incorrect. That was Mr. Jones' production. The last person to buy time and run a full season of high school football games on 95.3 was Scott Harrison who did the Wylie games in the 2008 season.

technical
The fine technical quality is a result of the fact that, as far as I know, Mr. Jones neither owns nor knows what a Comrex is. It's amazing he only had three children. (Okay, I will state here: that WAS a joke. If I have to explain it, you will not find it funny. You might not find it funny anyway. moving on...) Historically he has always used a straight POTS line for any remotes or sports events. It is almost impossible to find POTS lines in high school stadiums and gyms anymore so he has moved into the 21st century and now uses a straight cell phone signal. I have seen one of his crews using a SMARTI.

high school kids
No, not high school kids. I did not hear the Trinity-Coppell game Friday night but did hear a game on 95.3 last weekend. Mr. Jones' lead announcer (the one I heard last week) is Scott Powell. Scott last attended high school over thirty years ago.

you can't expect a whole lot
Mr. Jones expects a whole lot. Like at least a game $2,000.00 if you want to broadcast a high school football game on 95.3. Bring a lot more if you are a college or university.

not exactly a ratings monster.
Who cares about ratings when you're getting $700.00 (+/-) an hour on a station that's only 15,000 watts, uh, make that 50,000 watts (Mr. Jones does.) on a stick 50 miles from downtown Dallas.

Here's another tidbit about two other sports announcers of his: The guys that do the Rockwall High games (fb, bkb,sb, bsb) do the games for Mr. Jones' favorite price: ZERO. One of them is a prosecuting attorney in the Rockwall County DA's office. When telling me about their talent "fee", they also noted they kinda like it that way. They have the freedom to do just bout whatever they want (within reason) on the air. The question they then asked me was: "If he doesn't like what we're doing, what's he gonna do? FIRE US???"

Sgt. Hans G. Schultz, [EDIT]

I was asking a question, and making an observation if my question was correct.

I get the feeling you're and engineer, your responses are long winded and over the top just like most weird engineers would be.

You're not cute, you're not funny...[EDIT]. Simple.

No, they are not high school kids.

"It is almost impossible to find POTS lines in high school stadiums and gyms anymore"

They're still out there! McKinney, Rockwall, Eagle Mustang and Wildcat Ram, Sherman (shared with a freakin' fax machine!) Highlander, Ford Stadium at SMU, Cowboys Stadium, SL Carroll, Coppell,
Sprague (locked away but it's there), Standridge, Clark, Kimbrough, Greenville, Terrell, Hanby and Mesquite Memorial are just a few with full time provided lines. I think you have to pay Jerry for the use of his though. Mesquite wants $50 bucks per game (to pay Steve and Ed I guess). Most are true POTS and not run through a VOIP phone system. Most will allow maximum bit rate with a codec like a Matrix or Bluebox. Or work well with a Zercom or hybrid.

Rockwall is the only one that provides a full blown ethernet connection too. A Comrex Access works great on it.

The only two I've found that don't have POTS lines are Forney and Royse City.

These are football stadiums, who knows what lurks inside school gyms.

It's one fee per season, not per game at MISD. If you wind up doing more than one playoff game at Hanby or Memorial, you only pay for the first one. Most HS gyms have only digital systems now. If you need a POTS line, first thing you ask the coach is: Where's the closest fax machine?

Yeah, but what Ken Jones does is run 2 tin cans and a string and then broadcast the games. the SGT Schultz should remember, h tied the string.

If anyone cares, take a listen to 95.3 now... sounds like it's all being fed over POTS. nasty.

It's been overmodulated off and on for years.

Do you think Ken cares?

His dream is to succeed Ralph Hall in Congress. Sometimes, dreams die hard.

After losing two of three races for mayor of Rockwell, I would say his chances are practically nil. I told Ken that by the way during one of our many shouting matches.

I will say the man will listen. But after he listens, a rock would accomplish more.

Ken could sell ice to Eskimos, but he cares little about the stations other than what money he can make.

We used a Comrex Access at the new Rockwall press box two years ago, and it was smokin. Their POTS lines are also top grade, and will support Hotline/Bluebox/etc.

Royse City is a total joke. Not only is their visiting radio booth essentially outside, but there are no phone line, no internet connection (even though they say it is supplied) and they will not allow you to run a line in there. They expect that if you want to broadcast a game, you will use a cell phone ("That's what the small town radio station that came in here did") .

You can also add Waxahachie, Ennis, and Corsicana to stadiums that still provide POTS lines. Waco ISD is the best, and they even provide ISDN!
