Football Broadcasts from the Boondocks

Since you can't have field crew monitor off air due to the delay, someone must carry a cell phone so you can tell them that they are off the air.

I have a smartphone so I try to set it out on the desk in front of me and have someone send a text if there's a problem (the screen lighting up tends to get my attention). The wife usually listens to parts of the games so she knows when to expect me home, and she's more than happy to let me know when we screw up. :p

We typically do games unattended with a dial-up remote control system to fire the breaks, so a cell phone is left dialed in to send the DTMF and hear cueback from the station. It also makes for a nice emergency feed in case the codec connection tanks, as one can switch over to the phone feed with a button press. The only catch is that I keep having to remind the other guys to count off a second or two before firing the break to account for the codec delay, or they will cut off a word or syllable going into the break.
It does require a little bit of pot jockeying on the cue input volume. One has to turn it up going into the break, and then turn it back down to a low level coming out because of the delayed audio. I can tolerate delayed audio at a low level -- in my mind it turns into background noise, but I know if the noise goes away there's a problem...
