FOOTBALL FANS ANE YOU READY FOR.........

......the Super Bowl pre-game show.....with Katie Couric and Hannah Storm!!! No, I'm not kidding. I really really wish I were! According to the announcement made by CBS at the network's mid-year meeting, these two football experts will be joining JB, Boomer, and the rest of the NFL today team for the 4-hour pregame show. As for the game itself, the play-by-play team will be Jim Nantz, Greg Gumbel and Phill Simms. Dick Enberg and Dan Dierdorf will work the "Westwood One" radio side. Randy Cross will be in Iraq. Lucky him.

I'm betting the ladies will handle the off the field stuff, especially with the players families wives and...or...girlfriends. If the Saints make the show, you can bet about 1/3 of the "non football" pre game show will be about the city and its recovery. Look for them to get some advertising dollars from some advertisers who might not normally put out for an NFL broadcast..

Brown and Company will pop in and out so they dont' get burned out before the traditional hour long pre game.

Is that a typo? Nantz, Gumbel, and Simms? Am I correct to presume Gumbel may roam the sidelines?

Ok, now the details are out. Lineup remains the same as the regular season, except Ms Couric and Ms Storm will contribute pieces...stories ... to the pre game show. Put the paranoia away, the ladies will not be the focal point of the broadcast day...with so much time to cover, the network needs people and material...no matter how innocuous...to fill the long hours

At least Hannah Storm has had some sports experience from her days at NBC Sports. IIRC, she met Dan Hicks there and married him. Katie Couric.....she's nothing more than an empty-headed Barbie doll IMHO. WTKK Boston talk show host Margery Eagan has described Couric as being "hooker chic" numerous times in the Boston Herald.

Hannah was also a sports anchor at CNN prior to her NBC job. She also anchored local sports in Charlotte, and before that hosted pregame/halftime/postgame broadcasts for the Houston Rockets. I was rather surprised when she gave up the NBC gig for CBS's morning show, although with three kids she may have wanted to cut down on travel and weekend work.

I should hope that Gumbel would be working the sidelines. If not, the play-by-play will be a complete disaster!

Why not add Randy Cross into the mix? Afterall, he's been to a few Super Bowls. Picture this - Jim Nantz, Phil Simms & Randy Cross in the booth with Greg Gumbel roaming the sidelines.

This way they'd have equally vast knowledgeable experts in the pre, halftime, and post game shows as well as in the booth itself.

Have I gone totally insane or does this make sense?

Thoughts?

Cheers :D

Now that the "Super Bowl" is set, i was watching the post-game show, with my
television muted, late Sunday Night on CBS, and noticed the start time for their
coverage of the game on February 4th, 12 Noon U.S. East Coast Time!, Why?,
viewers don't want all the hype that leads to the kickoff at 6:30!, if you are going
to cover the game, just do a one hour pre-game show at 5:30, the game itself
from 6:30 until 10:15, and then finish with a 45 minute post game wrap-up
until 11:00, that's plenty of time, unless the football event goes into overtime,
overall, 5 to 6 hours is better than almost 11 hours, you would think so!

Ratings from previous years and the ad revenues that go with them say that viewers DO want this sort of programming.

There's a difference between tv sets on and people watching. I doubt anybody but serious junkies watches the whole pregame. But it's great background noise for Super Bowl parties.

And with what the networks pay for the rights, they have to get that money back, so why not do a lengthy pregame show and rake in lots of ads?

Me, I'll be watching the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.
