Football in HD?

Just saw on another R-I board that the Atlanta and Kansas City NFL games next fall will be broadcast in HD/surround by their anchor stations, owned by Cumulus (apparently from a story in Radio World). I'd love to know 1) where the money to create the technical infrastructure is coming from (Cumulus isn't exactly a cash-rich company right now) and 2) how many of the seven people with HD radios are going to listen to the games in HD/surround, or whether surround is even going to matter to them.

I wasn't even aware any of the HD-capable receivers out today could decode HD surround.

I'll be honest, I don't think I've ever heard any sporting event presented in stereo on radio or TV, much less surround sound. It's a feature I think would really add depth to games but none of the ones I've seen have ever featured it.

At least give us stereo crowd noise on FM simulcasts. Anyway, can't analog Dolby Pro Logic be decoded through an FM broadcast? There's really no need for HD surround.

Some stations turn off their HD during football games because of the delay. Older HD transmitters don't have ballgame mode.

Are you sure they weren't talking about ATSC, which does support discrete surround? You'd be surprised how many people tend to incorrectly lump all ATSC broadcasts under the "HD" category....

(Yes, DPL can be transmitted and decoded through analogue FM stereo, being a matrix-quad format. They did it that way with television audio for years.)

Yes, positive. The item I saw specifically said "HD radio."
