Football radio networks

It's almost time for football season here in the Palmetto State, and that means that games will air on the radio all over the place for local teams.

Clemson has set up its radio network for the season, most likely, and they have several new stations on their network, including 94.9 the Surf in Myrtle Beach.

Here is their list:

South Carolina still hasn't put theirs up, but we know that WORD-FM at 106.3 will air games in the Upstate, and that 107.5 the Game will air games in the Columbia area.

Here is last year's list, but it will be updated soon:

The Citadel has their network up, but I don't know if it is from last year or this year. Their network has grown to the third largest in the state.

South Carolina State still has their very small radio network, with WQKI 102.9 in Orangeburg and a Columbia station, but none in Charleston yet.

Charleston Southern has to find a new play-by-play person, as Josh Maurer left to go to the University of Massachusetts, to call their football, basketball, and baseball games. Their games were on WJNI 106.3 in Charleston last year.

Presbyterian also is setting up its radio network, with WLBG in Laurens the flagship, with games also on Presbyterian's student radio station, and inside each away stadium.

Coastal Carolina has a large network, but they haven't updated since 2006.

Furman looks like that they will use their 3-4 station radio network that they used in 2007, as Chuck Hussion will call their games this year again. Their flagship is WOLT 103.3.

Benedict College looks like that WTGH 620 in Cayce will air their games this year.

Allen University has no information on their radio.

Newberry will only be on WKDK, 1240, which will carry their games for the 63rd year in a row.

North Greenville will be on their campus radio station, WNGR.

Of course, Georgia will be on WBMQ out of Savannah, WFIS out of Fountain Inn, and WSB in Atlanta also brings some signal into the Upstate, along with several other stations.

There was an article in the Greenville News last week that said the Gamecocks would be on WBZT-FM 96.7 for football and basketball this year.

Thanks for the info, dxman! Football season can not start soon enough. I'm an NC State fan, so I have to have XM to hear my games, though I can pick them up on WTAB in Tabor City. I do enjoy listening to Clemson and USC's games.

Robby Robinson is leaving Citadel football games, as he got a job at Virginia Commonwealth University to do all of their basketball games. He will also be the Assistant Athletic Director for Sponsorships and Broadcast Services. He had been The Citadel's voice of football and basketball for eight years, and also did lots of baseball games.

The new voice is Darren Goldwater, formerly on the "FanTalk" show on WTMZ 910 in Charleston, who also did Citadel baseball games for the last couple of years, and called high school games for 910 the Team.

Here is the article from Charleston.net.

That is just great! I loved Darren on Fan Talk. Killer pipes. Great delivery. First time I heard him I thought it was Syndicated programming, then hearing the Kahuna going off let me know real quick that people still have faith in local radio, here in the low country. Bobby is awsome. Him and Darren together were just Dy-no-mite!! (in my best jimmy walker impersonation)

That is great news. I was concerned when I heard that he wasnt on Fan Talk anymore. I heard he had just gotten married and wifey has a great job in television so a move would have been out of the question, with Kirkman having sports on a lock down in the chuck, where did that leave him? And honestly, I couldnt believe that Kirkman would let such a talented individual walk, and at such a point in his life! Where is the justice!! ;)

Well its good to know I can hear him calling the Bulldogs football games now! Looking forward to it!!

Looking at the Citidel Athletics website today, Monday Aug 11th, Darren Goldwater is the Top story on their site.

Now back to reading up on Dawg football...

South Carolina State is picking a Charleston station back up this year. Here's the current list:

Columbia - Progressive Talk WOIC 1230 AM
Orangeburg - Old Skool 102.9 FM (WQKI)
Charlotte/Rock Hill - WGIV 1370 AM
Augusta - WAAW 94.7 FM
Charleston - WZJY 1480 AM
Columbia - ESPN Radio 93.1 FM (WZMJ) (Partial Schedule)

I am curious... what type of equipment are some of the smaller radio networks using out there both for the link from the stadium to the flagship and then to feed the rest of the network?

I know most of the larger schools have ISDN in all of the stadiums and use satellite based delivery to the affiliates, but that becomes cost prohibitive especially when you are only dealing with a network of 3 or 4 stations.

Im thinking the good old fashion phone line. But dont quote me on that one!

Ahhhh....football! Cant wait for the Sat night opener at Johnson Hagood for the dawgs!

GO DAWGS!!

BTW - SBR FRIGGIN' BLOWS. (quote me on that)

A lot of the stations I worked with use phone lines and a cell phone for main feed. Thats what my station does for our high school games. I know one set of stations that are using cell phone into an internet feed but the internet feed always seems to have troubles. One company that just can't keep their bandwith up is comcast cable they start out ok but many times during the season they fall apart and boom internet trouble and broken audio.
