FOR A TOP 20 MARKET.....PHX IS WEAK!

Was in PHX recently and had a chance to listen to radio.....Wow!

3 hip-hop or hip-hop leaning stations all of which play the exact same things over and over? 98.7 and 96.9 are a mess. 99.9 is the cheesiest A/C I've ever heard. KSLX is a weak classic rocker. KDKB is simply no good. 2 country stations. 92.3, one of the best signals in town, is talk? What's that all about? The only decent sounding stations in the Valley are KOOL and KYOT and the ratings show it. 103.9 is okay. Movin 97.5 is at least playing some different stuff....hope they make it. Anyone else think like I do ?
 
Heavens NO!

We like weak programming in Phoenix. Just look how long it took TMISU to bump McBland upstairs. And if only Movin 97~Five had their stick on South Mtn, they'd be just as successful as Movin 93~Three in el Lay!

What makes them a mess? What would you do better?

I think Mix 96.9 is a very good-sounding Hot AC, and 98.7 The Peak is one of more creative "Jack" type stations around...and as a bonus, it has some personality.

The demand for Country has always been strong in this market. KNIX and KMLE have been doing battle for nearly 20 years. I'd much rather have two competing Country stations than one behemoth station, or not have the format hole filled at all.

The only decent sounding stations in the Valley are KOOL and KYOT and the ratings show it.

Don't listen to KYOT enough to comment on it, but KOOL is indeed something special. Among Top 20 markets, isn't it the highest-ranked Oldies station? The fact that it's still Oldies to begin with is truly remarkable.

Personally, in terms of having a variety of format holes filled, I would say that Phoenix is one of the best, if not one of THE best, in the country.

YOU SHOULD COME TO DENVER...WHICH IS MARKET 22, A CITY GROWING AS FAST AS PHOENIX. Denver has no CHR-TOP 40 station, no(true) Old school, R&B station..such as KAJM. Denver also doesn't have a dance station....instead we have 2 Hot AC.'s which both are catered to women in their late 30's early 40's....which i have no problem, but comm'on.....also we have 3 country stations....KAVD/KWLI/KYGO........and 5 Rockers....KTCL/KBPI..which almost sound the same to me except BPI is a little more harder ROCK, KBCO/KQMT & KRFX all classic ROCK. :mad: 1 RYTHMIC.KQKS..which is very soft HIP HOP..which i am ok with but QKS play the same 20 songs over and their mixing is the same stuff every week.....

At least Phoenix has more Diversity with a Dance & Jammin R&B Station. You should come to Denver...then you'll know the meaning of WEAK RADIO.. :( :mad: :mad:
 
Wait... Denver is growing as fast as Phoenix? Huhwoah? That might not be true... ???

They have Hip Hop stations up there... they play the Sean Kingston re-mix of "Rocky Mountain High"

er, did you go through the ENTIRE dial in the PHX area?

Don't tell me there is anything MORE special where you come from - yeah? I've been most everywhere - granted, it's better outside the U.S.

Wah.

CHR/M has been tried and failed there.

You have two country stations, not three. Hardly any of the market can pick up KAVD, and it doesn't show in the book.

KTCL is Alternative, KBPI is Active Rock.

KBCO is AAA, not Classic Rock.

Jammin' was done, too.

The Dance station in Phoenix is a no-show, too. (That may not matter in your world, but in the real world, it helps to have at least SOME ratings.)

Phoenix metro area in 2006 had 3.8 million with a growth rate of 4.6% per yr, Denver metro has 2.6 million and a 2.1% annual growth rate, thus Phoenix's growth rate is more than double that of Denver.
 
Thanks for the numbers AZ Joe. In LloydLand we have had a 1% growth rate over the past year.
 
you should come to portland opregon we have 2 coutry stations our hiphop station is weak we have urban staion on am that cant pick up very well our chr station sucks i herd better chr stations in other city do good music and have good djs the sports station is garage moving 105 is wack fill with voicetrack djs all day

Funny thing is, he doesn't even spell "wack" the same way every time...saw it as "wac" in another thread.

I just now re-read this for the fourth time, and finally figured out what "the sports station is garage" is supposed to mean.

<sigh>
 
Mabye we should go to New Orleans.

15 Urban stations, 2 Rockers, mabye a rimshot country, and oh yeah, 75% of the city is still looking like crap after a Hurricane destroyed it 2 years ago. :D
