For Chris Romer: (The WMRO Restroom Floor Caved In!)

Chris,

We'll you're right about the building WMRO is in. Two weeks ago, the whole restroom floor caved in! The good part about it was the hot water heater is in what you know as the old, little, production room. That is not a production room anymore. I use it as a kitchenette with my refrigerator in there, microwave, coffee pot and a small card table with two chairs, so when I'm stuck up there at night, I have a place to eat.

We don't have a production room anymore there. I do all the production here at home. If I have to record something up there, we just use the audition channel on the BE Console to record into the on air pc. I use the software "gotomypc.com" to control the automation pc and transfer files into it. Not much to a little AM Station anymore. All the gear we have is newer and small.

Dad and I bought a new hot water heater in 1999, and I don't think it had anything to do with the floor caving it. The PVC pipes that come from the hot water heater now run above the floor. I think the toilet did or the line that feed the old water cooler that is no longer there. The water cooler wasn't there when Dad and I bought the building in 1991.

If I had the money, I would hire a crew and bulldoze the entire building! I would operate the station from a small construction trailer until I got a new, smaller building built, near the tower. The new tower is not in the same place as the old tower. Dad and I put up a new tower in 1999, a 150 ft. Self Supporting Tower, which requires no tower lights. I had that old shack that housed the original Gates 250 watt transmitter torn down. Back about two years ago, I came up one morning and found some homeless people sleeping in it. The shack was just about to come down anyway, so it's gone now. The new tower sits about 30 feet to the left of where the old tower was.

That old building we are in is almost as old as I am, they didn't build it right, and when you were working there when WAMG and Lee Raines was there, I assume it was bad. My understanding was he hired a contractor to add on to the building (the two offices) and that nasty back room to house those big tube transmitters. They didn't do that right either. Those old tube transmitters are not there anymore either! I sold them to Ham Operators that like to play with old AM transmitters in the Ham Bands.

WMRO has only one transmitter, which is the BE AM 1A. Its solid state, fits in a 19 inch rack, and only weights 90 pounds. The rack it is in also houses my audio processing, modulation monitor, and EAS. Here is the link to what transmitter we use now:

Like I said, it's small, saves on the AC Bill, no tubes, and takes up no space. I think you would agree with me that we don't need that big, falling down addition anymore. No big transmitters! :)

I talked to Lee Raines just before Christmas and got the whole story on that building we are in. I do know he was operating his insurance company out of those two additional offices that he had built on, which we don't need.

I stayed at home today due to I have a crew up there to fix the restroom floor. They will be working tomorrow too.

When you’re not doing anything, come up and see what has happen to the building. Leslie has to go to the candle store at Rivergate Mall and buy scented candles and we use lots of "Frebreze" to keep that building smelling decent.

"What would Horatio do? ::) (HA!)". He would take off his sunglasses and think there was a crime scene there! It stinks to be in that buliding, after all the work Dad and I put into that building is coming apart!
