For fun: What songs would you bring back to Soft AC if you could?

I can't tell you how many times I've been in a store where only one side of their stereo is playing.
WDRC-FM Hartford, back in its oldies days, used to play the Mamas & the Papas' "I Saw Her Again" through one channel every time it aired. The lead singer on the song was barely heard at all, disappearing completely at some points when all one could hear coming out of the speakers was the "doo-doo-doo-doo-ing" of the backing vocalists. That faulty file was used for much of the station's last decade under Buckley Broadcasting's ownership.

An oldies station where I live played "Up Up and Away" by The Fifth Dimension and there was a whole section of the song that sounded like something was missing.

Nor familiar with it. I like "Traces" and "Stormy". Do not like "Spooky" which Dean Daughtry and J.R. Cobb did with Atlanta Rhythm Section. I like their version better.
Same, except I do like the Classics IV version of "Spooky".

KXBX 1270 was like this for years back in it's MOYL days. Often I would hear a song with one (usually right) channel missing ("California Dreamin'" sounds really odd, since much of the main melody is carried on the right).

What is Haeco-CSG processing?

EDIT: Ah, I see. Yeah, lots of recordings from then have either Haeco-CSG or something similar. I think the mono 45 mixes don't so much, because I've noticed that they tend to sound better.

After reading up on it a bit, it apparently can be removed fairly easily by applying a -90 degree rotation to the right channel.

I'll have to go through my collection and check this out. There are some stereo recordings that sound marginal in mono, and I'm wondering if this is why.

Haeco-CSG was supposed to improve mono compatibility, by reducing "center channel buildup". A lot of later mono 45s sent to radio stations were made by taking a stereo recording, running it through the CSG processor, and summing the output to mono. It allegedly eliminated the need to make a dedicated mono mix of the recording.

The downside is that if you listen to a CSG recording in stereo, especially through headphones, the vocals sound out-of-phase and appear smeared across the stereo image, rather than come from dead center. It sounds a lot like listening to a badly aligned tape head.

From the 80s...

Key Largo -- Bertie Higgins
Just Like Starting Over -- John Lennon
Always On My Mind -- Willie Nelson

I did a quick search... (honestly I did!) Obviously missed it. :) Will try to be more careful.

I just did a "find in page", which is OK when you only have two pages. How are we going to deal with repeats when this thread gets longer?

That being said, from the 80s:
Wake Me Up Before You Go Go -- Wham!
I Just Called To Say I Love You -- Stevie Wonder

From the 70s: Pretty much anything by the Spinners, and the Stylistics.

Because nobody else has mentioned them, I've come up with a few more (I won't go by decade as it's a bit easier):
Early Billy Joel: She's Always A Woman and You're My Home, to name couple
Barbara Mandrell: (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right, It's A Crying Shame
Randy VanWarmer: Just When I Needed You Most, Call Me
England Dan & John Ford Coley: It's Sad To Belong
Loggins & Messina: Travelin' Blues, Your Mama Don't Dance
Stephen Bishop: On And On

Read the whole thread before posting?

Seriously, in a thread like this one that's a good idea because someone might post a song that you had forgotten yourself ...

I suspect both of those, being already in most Classic Hits stations' libraries, are already getting AC play. Maybe not the stations you listen to, but still ...
