FOR SALE: WLNE

BTVN is reporting this morning that WLNE has been put up for sale. I'm sure this will make many on this board happy, as many of you have complained for years about the news division of the station. I'm sure a new owner will either wipe out news completely or completely revamp the news division. Either way things could get interesting.

No one in their right mind would actually buy it. I don't know how it will cause things to get "interesting". They've tried a million different formats since 1980 and nobody watches.

What is BTVN? Is that the unreliable board where someone once claimed that WHDH was for sale? Or is it that other Business rag that claimed that CBS was rumored to be making WCBS FM a Spanish station (which seems a far out rumor).

Can you please post a link to the story? Thanks.
Until I read the actual information or see it reported by more sources, I don't believe that WLNE is for sale.

BTVN is a blog type site on Yahoo Groups. The site is called Boston TV News. It's run by the guy who posts on here as "MaxBTVN." If you simply do a Google search for Boston TV News, you should find the link to their site.

I don't believe WLNE is for sale. We have been hearing these rumors for years that companies like Gannett, Hearst-Argyle, or Belo were going to buy the station and get their news operation out of the ratings basement. I won't believe it until I see it.

I know that Freedom selling the station would make Ethan very happy! Maybe the station will use the music packages from Frank Gari that he wants. Also, they may build the studio set that he's wanted for years. Ethan, you may get your wishes yet!

I'm Max Preston, the guy who (co-)runs BTVN. You can find us at http://www.btvn.net. We never reported anything about WHDH being sold, though somebody tried to start the rumor that NBC were interested in making it into an O&O. We didn't run with it. As for WCBS, well that is not our department, either in terms of market or medium. We don't do New York and we don't do radio unless it has a direct tie to TV. We do have some people who get Providence stations, and my colleague Rob Mignogna decided to run the story based on a reliable inside tip. Whether they do end up being sold and to whom has yet to be seen.

Oh, and we're MSN, not Yahoo, but we're moving to our own independent site very soon. We also ran the only full interview Caterina Bandini did before leaving Channel 7 last week. It's up on YouTube. I'm going to be stepping away from the site soon, so if there's anyone out there who might be interested in taking over some of my duties, please feel free to get in touch with me. (You get to know a lot of anchors and reporters and producers and such. It's a fun gig and it only usually take up about a half-hour of my day.)

My care and compassion for WLNE has lessened over this past year. Still a loyal viewer of WLNE, I've grown to understand that whatever is done, the station will never suceed in the ratings. One possible reason for this is that of habits. Sure, we'll tune to ABC6 for Housewives, Lost, and Anatomy among others, but then come 11PM, we're gonna turn to 10 and 12 for the news. It's a habit for the viewing area. Unfortunately, 6 is in nobody's habit, and there's nothing that can change that. I just wanted those certain things Shawn pointed out because I wanted to see a change in image. Wouldn't you all like to see a better ABC6? But anyway, seeing as nothing will change in the ratings, my hope for WLNE is little to gone. Quite frankly, I just want to see ABC6 News hang it up and shut down. Their top stories tonight at 6 were about babies. How pathetic. Who wants to hear about that. Tell 10 and 12 to cover a baby.

As far as WLNE being for sale goes, hopefully it's true and that someone good will buy them, but obviously it's no use. There's nothing that can be done for higher ratings or having WLNE as people's routine.
