For some reason, i miss cable television in the 90s.......

USA Network had one game show after another, and The Family Channel had the same thing...... and reruns were also in the mix too; Lifetime had China Beach, Heartbeat, and they had a few game shows then too. and Family Channel had one of my favorite shows, Life Goes On too. The Waltons were on too.

And The Discovery Channel showed documentaries, and The History Channel was full of actual historical footage. Now both are primarily reality TV and/or supernatural hokum. Also, ESPN showed replays of games you missed the night before, rather than drawn-out shoutfests and LeBron James worship.

A&E had concerts and British mystery shows, don't forget them. TLC stayed true to their heritage at that time with a lot of educational and how-to programs, including those surgery shows. My 600 Lb Life is NOT educational!
Nick at Nite was a treasure trove of classic TV - instead of what it is today, 36-minute reruns of Friends. TV Land started up in 1996 and had double the classic TV plus the Retromercials here and there. Game Show Network was starting up and instead of 14 hours of Family Feud every day, you could see nearly any game show you wanted - from vintage Bob Barker TPIR (in both 60 and 30-minute versions) to the $1.98 Beauty Show and everything in between. And VH1/MTV still had some music videos and similar programming.

Is it any wonder I keep buying used blank VHS lots looking for these treasures from a different era? Most of the TV spectrum (outside of pay-TV and some subchannels) is worthless to me in 2020, and 70% of cable is crummy reality shows, sitcom reruns lengthened to 36 minutes to fit a zillion commercials, and the 564th airing of that movie I already saw a few years ago, still edited and chopped up for ads...

Funny you mention this as 2 of those 3 shows were ABC original properties that they canned after 4 seasons max. Family Channel must have aired Life Goes On right after they were axed, as it was 1993 or 1994 if I recall correctly.

Life Goes On would have 'gone on' for more than 4 seasons if it didn't get stomped by its competition over at CBS - 60 Minutes. Definitely an inspirational show. MeTV or Antenna TV should put it on their schedule.

That show and China Beach always seemed to amaze me when i was a child. And i know, no child like me wanted to watch 60 Minutes. It just didn't appeal to me then, like Life Goes On did. These two shows showed me how good Dana Delany and Kellie Martin were in their roles.

Both Life Goes On and American Gladiators premiered in the same year- 1989. They were two of my favorite shows. And both were "family friendly" shows- shows that were not racy, nor offensive for me. Our House was another show that fit this trope.
