For tabletop radios are Tivoli better than Bose?...

A better choice than either is the Sangean WR-2. Neither it nor the Tivoli sound quite as good as the Bose, but my experience with the Bose is it is not all that sensitive. It is also incredibly expensive for a table radio.

The Sangean is quite sensitive, exhibits good selectivity and will display RDS info if present. Although it has only one speaker, the tuner is stereo if you choose to listen using headphones or connecting it up to an external amplifier and spearker system. Even in mono - like theTivoli - it is very pleasant to listen to. You can find them on line (try Amazon) for less than $125.

Depends on your use for it. I have the Sangean WR5 and the Bose Wave Radio. The Bose (with the large remote control option found on Ebay) is great for my purpose--a great sounding, easy to use while half asleep, clock radio. The FM is reasonably sensitive, the AM is pitiful. The WR5 on the other hand is tough to set the alarm time, etc on even while wide awake with the instruction book. Worthless as a clock radio, but as a table radio, the WR2 sound is great. It's brighter sounding than the Bose but, unlike the Bose, it has bass and treble controls. Two radios, two purposes...I'm glad I own both.

I have a Tivoli Model 1 sitting here at WKDK, tuned to 1240 with the tower just outside the building less than 50 feet away. Tuned RIGHT on frequency the radio works fine. It's only the second radio I have ever seen that will REALLY do this very well.

One of the very best radios ever IMHO is the Sony HD tuner. They made a model that Best Buy sold for a while that had a iPhone port at the top and I think they also had a version that didn't. Regardless, either unit are kick-butt for FM reception.

I have a particular problem as I live in a concrete and steel high rise in S.E. Iowa. There are only two local AM stations, the weaker of the two being unfortunately my favorite. There are two full power local FMs with several not too distant stations and a bunch of God's translators and LPFMs but my favorites are the ones I can't receive. Any kind of external antennas, or window rigs, are strictly forbidden by building management.

Curiously I have one of those Sony personal receivers that gets better reception than my table radio. I've looked at various tuners and amplifier setups but finances make those difficult to get. If I do buy something I want to be certain that I am not throwing my money away.

Any suggestions? I live in Ottumwa Iowa.

+1. I've had a Sangean for years and it still produces beautiful, detailed sound. It doubles as a monitor for my home studio space.
