For the D/FW area digital fans...

Even though I don't watch OTA TV, I still find the threads about DTV here interesting. In fact, I have a digital set-up available to me but I haven't bothered with it. I get everything I need, I suppose, from Dish Network.

So my question is this: is there anything on the digital channels or sub-channels that would be worth the effort? How about a "top 10" list of what you'd consider compelling or somewhat worthwhile?

K31GL (31-4): RTV
WFAA (8-3): This TV
KERA (13-2): PBS World
KXAS (5-2): Weather
KXAS (5-3): Universal Sports
KPXD (68-3): ION Life (movies, Godfather over the past weekend)

I'm not sure which of these are exclusive to OTA...but, aside from the normal dot-1 channels, those are my presets.

And there's always KHPK's 3-1 ultra-compelling programming. :)

WFAA3 (8-3) This TV (Pretty Good Movie Channel)
K31GL (31-4) RTV
WFAA2 (8-2) Weather/News
KERA (13-2) PBS World
KXAS (5-2) Weather
KXAS (5-3) Universal Sports
KPXD (68-3) ION Life

Basically The Same Things Bob Said.

And of course the fact all the .1's are usually in HD.

K31GL (31-4) RTV (Retro Television Network) Also run other old shows not from RTV.. local contests.. the people running this local station try hard and deserve some props for their efforts.

KPXD (68-3) ION Life (good for movies in prime time.. pretty good selection too) You can get this on cable too.

WFAA3 (8-3) This TV (some decent older movies)

WFAA2 (8-2) Weather/News (better radar than 5 and they do run headlines and news clips)

KERA (13-2) PBS World (lots of PBS repeats.. news shows.. focus on some of the science stuff)

KXAS (5-3) Universal Sports (kind of obscure sports.. cycling, track and field, volleyball)

KXAS (5-2) Weather (just radar and current conditions..not very good)

KJJM (34-3) My Family TV (old tv shows.. really really old.. old movies.. not great, but occasionally fun to watch)

I have Dish too, but I save the $5/mo surcharge and get my local stations OTA. A couple of local broadcasts - Ion (68.1) and HSN (25 analog) - are available on Dish anyway.

Plus, since my Dish receiver isn't one of the newer HD ones, it's the only way for me to get network shows in HD. (Plus I don't pay Dish the HD surcharge....)

I also save $5 a month by not receiving the locals from Dish Network. The Dish ViP722 HD receiver I got has a slot in the back for an optional OTA tuner module which I bought so I can use the DVR on OTA locals. More of a hassle to use though because Dish doesn't show the locals on the program guide if you don't subscribe to the locals! Also I was reading up on Dish's latest "deal" Free HD For Life, ( "Life" = as long as you continuously remain a Dish customer) and noticed it said the local channels are now included in all packages, and there's no more option to not receive locals via Dish and save $5 a month. hmmm... I don't like that.

I am glad I kept the outdoor antenna. Being a recent Dish newbie I just converted from a Big Dish I've had since 1987. I was not expecting normal rain events and moderately dense clouds to block the Dish Network signal for 30 min to an hour at a time as I experienced 4 times in the past couple of weeks with the rain we had here. Their "99.9%" signal claim has failed the test! Their "tech support" tells me all is OK and it's normal based on signal strength when weather is clear.
