For those that remember 107 WANS, check this out.

Scott, We did the Biondi show in the WNMB studios, and we did it in real time. Biondi, of course, was the dj. I ran the board and did the engineering, and the show was orginally produced by a fellow from Laguna Beach named Joe Weidensall. He flew in here and rented a condo for a time. The show aired on approximately 60 stations across the USA, including Buffalo, Los Angeles and Chicago where Biondi had worked before. I saved many of recordings we did. They were produced on reel to reel. They then went to Century Records where they were produced on vinyl records (lp), and then they were distributed each week to the stations. (pre-satellite days).
We had lots of fun doing artist interviews.
The show was originally to be called "Dick Biondi's Solid Gold Rock and Roll", but we found someone had a lock on the Solid Gold thing, so only the demo was called Solid Gold. The show itself became "Dick Biondi's Super Gold".

Hi all...Robyn is right. I am in Baton Rouge and truly miss working mornings in Greenville. Since WANS, I have successfully programmed several Oldies Radio stations and truly feel you are on to something. Those 18-34 year olds who LOVED WANS in the 80s are now in radio's coveted 25-54 demo. It wouldn't take much for 103.1 to convince me to come home to program it and do mornings. "Be careful if your telephone rings...I'll Jolt ya'!"

Mike Benson
"in the mornin"

I think Anderson definitely needs to be Jolted again. That was one thing I never missed to see who got Jolted and to hear their reactions.

I just listened to the WANS stream on the website... AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those JAM jingles sound just as good as ever! Nice job. If anyone else is as flipped over these jingles as I am, WLS-FM in Chicago just had the Flame-Thrower package re-sung and they sound GREAT! Unfortunately, their on-line streaming has slightly different content than their on-air broadcast when it comes to jingles and commercial stop sets, only a few generic jingles on the on line stream.

To answer your question, WRIX-FM 103.1 is performing VERY poorly. In the latest book, their numbers decreased by about half of what they were! I will put it this way, WAIM-AM 1230 in Anderson (which is owned by a different company) handly beat WRIX-FM, WRIX-AM (gospel) and WANS-AM 1280 (ESPN) in the latest book! Actually, WAIM-AM numbers really continue to graow. They have a very popular morning show called The Rick Driver Show. They do news/talk as well, but have a much stronger lineup than wrix. WAIM has rush, sean hannity, savage Laura Ingrim, etc. WRIX FM 103.1 would be alot better of with Oldies and to change the call letters to WANS-FM. They can put the talk on WANS-AM. But, the smart thing would to make 103.1 WANS-FM-Oldies and WANS AM 1280-timeless classics.

If I recall correctly, there was a time in the early 1990's that 1280 was timeless classics and for the life of me do not understand why they changed it. I agree that 103.1 would be much better served as an oldies stationn because there is nothing like it serving the upstate and Western North Carolina. On a good day I can pick up 103.1 in Brevard and sometimes Rosman, NC.

I don't have a very good car radio sys but I get WRIX very well even in Greenville (even Woodruff Rd area), even Simpsonville. So it could be enjoyed by listeners outside of Anderson county as well. I know it reaches to Laurens (at least) to the east, not sure about its western coverage.

103.1 WANS - The Upstate's True Oldies Channel? I guess that's what it could be named.

Have y`all called the studios of WANS/WRIX yet to request the format change? The owner is Gary Bryant. He is usually there. The Program Director is Pork Chop. Let us know what they tell you! Yes, 1280 wanS AM did have a timesless classics/music of your life format back in the mid 1990`s-2000. In May 2000, it was replaced by a Carolina Beach format that had a limited playlist. then in Sept, 2000 former owner (Matt Philips daughter) replaced it with Black Gospel. The format was changed to ESPN/local Sports and sports talk in 2006. They need the Oldies on WANS-FM 103.1. Tell them that they can move the current talk format to 1280 wans-am. Let`s all help make this happen! thank You! Anderson has been without Good Times and Great Oldies for way too long!

I agree! We all must call to show Gary bryant that the WANS and Oldies belongs on 103.1!

Does anyone have a update on the return of Oldies and the WANS call letters to 103.1?

Has anybody heard back from the owners of WANS/WRIX about the proprosed WANS 103.1 FM and the oldies format?

I promise you I mean this with all due respect. Not sarcastic at all. That being said, if I were a station owner and I started getting a bunch of emails and phone messages out of left field demanding a format and call letter change, I would run far, far away. A bunch of radio fans like us are not going to convince someone to do this. "Good times and great oldies", I don't know who you are. But if you really want this to happen, you need to put together a business plan with real numbers and projected billing, etc. If you want Mike Benson come back to town, then you need to involve him and what his salary requirements would be. If you are not in position to do this, have Mike do it himself. What kind of return email do you expect from this owner? "Okay, sounds good, I'll flip it tomorrow". Okay, that was sarcastic. But again, I'm not trying to be mean. I think it's a great idea. But someone really needs to go to this guy with some substance and tell him exactly WHY he needs to do this.

Well, Geez.............. Bugz, Don`t you think that it MIGHT be time to switch the format after your once-booming operations are now being defeated by a smaller AM (WAIM) that last defeated you 28 years ago? WRIX has a weaker talk format than WAIM and the ratings show it. The ratings on ESPN WANS 1280 are non-existant!!!!!!! Yes, Mike Benson and WANS FM need to return to town with the Oldies! It is a no-brainer!

Well geez.....GTAGO. You're missing my point. No one disputes that it would be a great move. But if this guy knew what he was doing, he would have already done the right thing and flipped formats. Someone has to spell it out for him. But it's not going to happen by having us radio types email him. You got to take him a plan. Actually, whoever wants to be his PD and Morning Show needs to take him the plan that shows the value of making a change and that puts the responsibility on someone other than him.

Man, is that old school or what? But, you know what? It's the right thing to do. It's just one teeny-tiny facet that's wrong with radio to begin with...corporate wonks that have never keyed a mike are deciding(along with consultants and blowhards<I know...that's redundant>) which way the wind blows formatically without ever having visited the area to begin with. There is no ****ing way they have their finger on the pulse of the respective communities they are responsible for unless they immerse themselves in those communities.

In this case however, it sounds like the owner is sitting around in his skivvies, sipping an ice cold prune juice and contemplating an enema rather than growing his business.

That is what I really miss about locally owned radio and television. The corporate world has gotten involved and they have no clue from whereever they decided the programming from and you can be rest assured that it is not locally done.
I guess I am old enough to remember the good old days of local radio and how good it really was and wish that we could go back to that.
